Short TRooper
MY GOD! gold hit $1003.50, i think i need to find another job now. holy $%^& this is not good. I saw that on the TV this morning and I about fell over that gold is this high. And after the Dems proceeded to cut the tax cuts that President Bush put up and elected to fund their pork projects made me feel even sadder for t his country. We are going under and it scares me...I can't get a job even if I wanted to and then with my Medic Aid being cut I can't even get the care I need now! My armor is going to have to wait now to be finished... Short Trooper (Diana)
TD2802
And as predicted, proving that banks do look out for themselves - today JP Morgan Chase is helping bail out Bears Stearns from its subprime debacle with a loan, again no surprises there. In banking we call that 'risk mitigation'. Here's another inconvenient truth for digestion: this country (the good ol' US) won't go under because its not in the interests of our economic competitors believe it or not, no matter who's in charge. A huge chunk of the national debt is being underwritten by creditor nations like China, Gulf-Arab states and Euroland. In short, many of these countries are the largest holders of US Treasury bonds and major speulator/owners of reserve boullion. Simply, the dollar is weak, interests set low by the fed translates into our gold becoming a bargain in commodities trading. In the long run therefore that means any saber-rattling against them is counter to our economic self-interest as well. Without taking any sides, I do believe a US strength is its ability to reinvent itself despite the economic hardships. The creativity I see here at MEPD and the exchange of ideas and yes, armor and swag with our overseas comrades demonstrates that strength as a success in microcosm. oo-tee-dee!
They drive smaller cars. Also, there is excellent public transportation. Excellent public transport? Where did you hear that from our rail network is a joke, the London Underground is a marvel considering it is so ancient and underfunded, yet carries millions of people thru London daily, it's cheaper to drive somewhere than it is to get a train, and each time I wait for a bus I'm standing around for at least 45 minutes while the drivers are parked in some layby having a nice break elsewhere! And there is a growing number of Brits who are buying Planet-Killer 4x4s and SUVs, mostly mums who simply use them to drop little Johnny off at school then go fetch the shopping. Like they NEED a 4x4.....they are status symbols here, and parents have it in their heads that their kids are "safer" in a 4x4 cos they are "higher up" - yet that in itself is a danger if they get into a skid or a wobble while driving fast - the higher centre of gravity means they will flip over much easier. oo-tee-dee!
The Underground still is great, in the sense that some of the lines and carriages appear very rickety and there are horror stories of the maintenance men re-using old pieces of rail to fix problems on other sections of rail....there is nearly always some line closure and extra replacement buses due to the constant maintenance, but again, considering just how used it is and how many millions of people it transports I'm surprised there's not been a good few nasty accidents to date! Scootch
Man I know.............I bought a turbo diesel for work because I was constantly going to remote locations.....1.50 per gallon back then, Now it's more than gasoline! All because diesels became populer! Has nothing to do with refining costs and it pisses me off! So now I work in an office and ride my mountain bike whenever possible! Greedy oil schmucks!!!!! DYoung
Alright- I'm getting ******* ******! Oil closed out at 132.00 a ******* barrell!!! Watch this video, and it'll get you even more fired up! You'll love this- http://money.cnn.com/video/#/video/news ... l.cnnmoney You can thank those ***** on the NYSE for some of the blame. The other two-thirds? Our Government for being ******* shortsighted, and OPEC and others for limiting the amount of oil being pumped that's creating a strain on the world economy. What gets me is that we give the Saudi's military weapons, and we're helping them build nuclear power facilities, while they're paying .93 per gallon, and they're still ******* us! WTF?!? Time to strong arm those fuckers, and say enough is ******* enough. Don't call us the next time one of your "brethren" countries decides to invade your sorry *****.... In closing, it's time for our Government to get off their ******* high horses, and allow us to drill and find more resources, while we have the time to figure out cheaper and more effiecent ways to power our machines. A revolution is a healthy thing once in a while... I'll almost be as bold to say, that if gas gets too high, you might see some leaders "fall" from power. I'm not sayin' it, I'm just sayin'.......... :cuss:
Daetrin
Or, the car companies can make more efficient cars. 17 years ago a Ford Escort got 40mpg - about as good as a Prius does today. Can not the auto industry be held responsible for having made no gains in fuel efficiency in almost 20 years? I understand GEO Metros can get almost 50 mpg, and they're also over a decade old. Actually my anger goes to my neighbors who insist on driving an 11mpg Escalade or other large SUV (pimped out of course) and driving by themselves 30 miles each way to work. They could have instead spent a $2000 on a very efficient and cheap to maintain commuter for these purposes. They would have recouped this investment in a very short time, and if more people did this our gas consumption would be less too. To be honest, we elected the current administration who's had 8 years to figure something out. Perhaps the people who voted for them should shoulder some blame as well? TD2802
As much as everyone would like to stick it to OPEC, their deep pockets can afford the best congressional lobbyists on the planet to influence (and hinder) meaningful energy reform. I actually work with a guy who's ecstatic about recent oil prices: two years ago he bought x number of shares of British Petroleum stock for about U$27.00 per. Now world demand and speculation has jacked it up to about $76.00 a share in less than 6 months. The amoral lesson here, if you can't beat 'em, invest in them. We told him to keep his joy in check lest he suffer some unforseen accident in the break room.
Smitty
Hmmmm.....here's the problem. We get attacked by terrorists, then we launch operation glass parking lot. Up up up go the prices. Thats one more gold lamborghini to go in the Sultan's garage. Should he park it by the gold mercedes? The USA's achillies heel has come to light in a really bad way. Ok screw it I'm going into politics, I've decided I can't make it as an honest man any longer.

There was a on-going commercial on the radio telling people they could invest in oil to make money. Yeah, invest to make money and drive up your gas prices at the same time. I tell you though, it's still cheaper for me to commute 60 miles a day at a cost of roughly $10 than to pay for public transit which would be over $18. Short TRooper
Gas just jumped here from $3.89 to $3.99 and will go to over 4 bucks by the weekend! Geeze cant even go to do what I need.I have to go take my two girls to two diffrent medical appointments in two diffrent towns and each is either 40 miles round trip or 180 miles round trip and it takes me a tank and a half of gas to do it, not to mention the Dr fees and costs. Will cost me a mint just for those 2 trips! Short Trooper (Diana)
dutchy
Over here we can see a major difference in car use. People who commute will still be using them on a daily bases. All the other people, stated the news, use alternative ways of tranportation like the bus or train and some use their bikes.. The gasprice over here is still rising, I myself drive a diesel but I have seen the price go sky high within a few months, from €89ct to a whopping €1,39ct ...really crazy...and on top of that, still more and new taxes are invented to make our lives even more miserable
