Daetrin
I use a snap system on my FX armor and it's fantastic. Takes me just a few minutes to put the armor on/off, they never pop, I never have to adjust them, and they never get tangled with each other like velcro. I tried doing snaps for my TE2 suit but the plastic is a bit softer and I'm not sure it can take the strain. Also, I'm having a hard time making snap plates with styrene. So... 1) Has anyone ever put a snap system on their TE/TE2? If so, which method did you use? 2) Can you mix/match plastics, e.g. use an ABS snap plate on HIPS armor? Lastly, if you're not doing snaps, what can I do besides velcro? I've seen one neat system where they basically used a strapping system but instead of snaps, the bases have a resistance slot where you can put a strap through. Thoughts? The armor's pretty much done, just need to get the strapping system figured out.
SethB6025
1) yes 2) yes I also have a few straps glued via E6000 at both contact points and attaching in the middle with a plastic buckle. On my next suit I'm going for maximum strapping accuracy, and keeping all the snaps on the middle of the straps and attaching the strap permanently to the plastic via glue or rivets. weiBes trooper
I rivited my straps onto the the abplate and middle back plate for the movie look and done the snaps on the other pieces. worked out nice and looks authentic.
troopermaster
I put the snaps onto a strip of HIPS and only glue the ends of the strip. I use E6000 and it's great stuff. Just make sure you keep the glue away from the snaps or it could melt through or show through the plastic on the outside. Sand both sufaces and apply the glue to both as well, then wait 5 mins and stick together. I just use a bit of masking tape to keep them in place while they dry. steve12201
Seth, I am also looking into a snap system for my armor. Are you saying that the originals had exposed snaps or likely exposed snaps that would be positioned mid-way between the two pieces that you are connecting? Like this -> ]==0==[ or still behind one of the two armor pieces like this -> ]===[=0= Where "[" and "]" are the edges of the armor. Hope that makes sense. SethB6025
On the real ones it looks like the snaps were all on the straps, and the straps either riveted or glued to the armor, rather than a snap glued to the armor and the strap snapping to that. steve12201
Would you recommend snaps over some sort of adjustable straps. I could probably hide the adjustable part if the tolerances/lengths were already pretty close.
Daetrin
The problem I was having had to do with the thickness of the material. I tried it with different thickness and it worked out n/p.
