pashnak
Ok so I have my mortar tube. and I have a jug lid. Is this the correct size ? am I missing anything ? How does it attach to the pipe ? Just a bolt .?
inglorious trooper
yeah,i just used a nut and bolt with a large rounded head!
pashnak
Do I need a larger lid to use as the back of the ridged dish and trim off the lid handle ?
crashmann
To mount the radar dish to the pipe, I use a 1/4" x 3/4" screw with an acorn nut painted white. Surrounding the dish should be a 1/8" (maybe as big as a 1/4" ) black lip, just slightly larger than the ribbed lid. There's a ton of great reference photos for the backpack here: http://www.elitestor...erence-pictures Charlie
pashnak
Is the lid about 5" or 6 " ? The one I have seems a bit small compared to the pics .
Vf2112
I drilled a hole the size of the handle in pipe then cut out the piece between hole and end slide handle inside pipe and put end cap back on
crashmann
Is the lid about 5" or 6 " ? The one I have seems a bit small compared to the pics . It depends on who you ask There are two Tupperware pitcher lids available. One is a little over 4" and the other is 5" Some folks strongly believe the smaller lids were used on screen. Others think it was the larger lid. I don't think we'll ever have the resolution in the screen captures to make a definitive measurement and declare which size was used. You could use the tube as a reference point, and declare it is a 2" diameter. However, that would be a 2" inner diameter. How thick was the wall of the tube? Is it 2 1/4" outside diameter, or 2 1/2" ? Just like the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, the world may never know Charlie
pashnak
Cool , I will stick with the smaller size I have. Just need to glue the lid to the CD then bolt to the pipe. Hopefully without anything breaking :D
pashnak
Is the jug lid left unpainted or should it be white & weathered ?

I can load images into it as well. What you do is calibrate the measuring tool by choosing two "known" points, then all measurements can be made at that same scale. I loaded in the image of the backpack, and figured the radio dial face was 2" (based on the decal from Trooperbay). Based on that, the radar dish/tupperware lid is 3 3/4". Safe to say the 4" lid is correct.
P3laton3
how much is that in decimals?
ghoulcinder@hotmail.co.uk
3.75" or 9.525cm
netslave
4" for short range radar, 5" or greater for long range radar. The fact that most troopers on Tatooine were issued the 4" dish is probably why they couldn't find the droids. I think this explains the mysterious suffocation of the supply officer in Mos Eisley. At least that's my fan boy explanation.

I can say now that I'm definitely in the "smaller lid" camp. The (roughly) 4" lid is the one that works perfectly with a CD behind it. The CDs radius is about 1/4" longer. Looks just right to me. Now for the practical advice... The 4" lid comes on the 1 quart Tupperware pitcher. I think the product number is 874. There are a lot of 2 or even 1.5 quart pitchers for sale. They have the larger lid. If you want the 4" lid, you want the tall, slender 1 quart pitcher (874).
