TK8034
The main body is basically finished. The rear cap and eye pieces are next. Probably be done by this weekend.
TK8034
Well, as far as molding a real Simrad... 1. All the Simrads that we have here at work are functional and they didn't want me to possibly destroy any in the molding process. 2. If I bought a real one, I would have to recoup the costs of the real one on top of the molding and manufacturing which would take forever. 3. They are very hard to find. I found only two after a few months of searching. One was in good condition but I didn't care for the seller's attitude. Size for size, this is exactly the same. We have the real one here that we were able to pull molds of simple parts off of. We bought the V8 engine model kit. I doubt you will be able to tell in the end. We are very critical of quality. TK8034
The material is called Renshape. There are several different densities of this material available. It is about $300+ per board. It's awesome to work with and sands beautifully. We use it all the time.

TK8034
We are almost done with this thing. It was quite a bit of work to make it look authentic. I assure you that this thing is to scale. I think it came out quite well actually. I'm very happy with it.

TK8034
Well, I must admit, I am not the one making this. I am paying one of our propmakers to make it. He is very talented and fast. I will pass on the compliments though. We should be into the mold this week.

hpdblues
JB, You quoted a price of about $200.00 for the lower 48 continental U.S. What's the estimated cost for AK and HI? Aloha, T
TK8034
I would say that the only difference would be the shipping costs. I haven't cast one of these yet so I'm not sure what the difficulties are in casting. Rubber is quite a bit thicker than resin. It doesn't like to go into details by itself. You have to force it to go. If I were making these out of resin, it would be a piece of cake. I would say that the shipping to AK and HI might be a few dollars more. I really have no idea other than and educated guess though.

TK8034
Okay. Here are the final pics of the master before molding. One of my hairs is stuck to the electrobinocs. I didn't see it there when I was taking the pictures but it does not come with it.
