CAVALIER
Hey fellow Sandies, With my side Shim, is it acceptable to overlap and rivet the ab end of the shim? Or must I butt and rivet? I will paint these white then weather, do i need to fill the holes in the rivet tops? Also I will try to fill the kidneyplate end join to appear as seamless as possible, (that end is butted). This build will only be for Police Officer deployment. Thanx.
TK4702
I would have butted it up against the rivets.
Kihl
Butted looks alot better, thats what I did with mine. Then bondoed the kidny side and sanded and weathered it to hide.
FIVE
Either way is fine. I personally like the overlapping if you're going to shim... just for strength. But, I would've probably added the shim underneath, riveted it to the front, and then added an exension on the kidney plate to butt up to the front plate. So the back-rivets aren't on the shim at all but on a 3rd piece on top of it all. That make sense? It looks good as is though if you're happy! FIVE
And yes... if you want LOOKS then you MUST butt it.
CAVALIER
Gee, can't argue with "looks good", one drill burn, 2 car trips and 30min later... (next step gap fill holes and Shim join, weather for effect...) Thx guys!

Quartermaster
Looks great Michael. The way you have done it is perfectly acceptable for Police Officer Deployment. SWAT on the other hand is another story. The most important thing is that the side gaps are closed.
CAVALIER
Thx QM, I can't imagine the level of work required for SWAT, maybe oneday though... lol... (do we need brass split rivets/ brads? for sides..., will need lots of practise to hide my shim seam... Bondo?)
