Boingo
Any suggestions on the best way to drill holes in 1" PVC pipe? I am using 1" PVC for the barrel shroud of my MG34 model. What should the size of the holes be? What kind of bit makes the cleanest hole? Which is better, a high speed or a lower speed? Will a drill press give me any better results than a hand drill? Miscellaneous?
TD8828
What should the size of the holes be? 3/8" I think What kind of bit makes the cleanest hole? High speed steel bit, as long as it's sharp Which is better, a high speed or a lower speed? High speed, otherwise the bit will gall up and bind Will a drill press give me any better results than a hand drill? Use a drill press to get your holes lined up on either side of the barrel, I made a jig with some brackets to keep the pipe stationary while drilling Miscellaneous? Take your time and wear safety glasses Good Luck!
jimbo890
I use one of those 'multi-bits' The kind that looks like a cone. Works great.
avatar_man
I am with Jimbo - multi bit (cone shaped) - not too fast or you'll melt the plastic..
motman241
First of all, 1" PVC is the wrong size. It's too small. Then, I found that when you drill holes in plastic, it's WAY easier to heat the plastic JUST A LITTLE. I've had many a hole ruined by drill bits chipping off plastic. The heat makes the plastic just bendable enough that that doesn't happen.
Boingo
1" is the inner diameter. The outer diameter, the one that is important, is 1 1/4".
