TD2802
Anyone know a good way of removing rivets like in a thermal detonator riveted to my belt? If there's a way of doing it without major ABS damage, pls let me know. Apologies for my ignorance and thanks!
SethB6025
Use a drill bit appropriate for metal, select one that is just a bit larger than the "middle" of the rivet. Drill into it, and it will come apart.
TD2802
Ok, i'll give it a try. Thanks for the tip!
slave1pilot
whoa there hoss. The rivet will heat up & melt the ABS. hold an Ice cube on the back side of the rivet & take your time., Go slow & try to keep the heat down.
TD2802
Instead of ice, what about a cold wet cloth?
slave1pilot
perhaps, but i used ice for the maximum cooling effect.

Caomhanach
The rivets can be removed easily. First, get a drill of the same size as the rivet (1/8"?) Slowly drill the head. Don't go through the stack, all you want to do is cut enough from the head to 'snap' it off (ie drill a little, move the drill in the rivet head, if it doesn't come off, drill a little more, then move to see it comes off...). All you are doing is removing the semi-sphere rivet head from the rest of the rivet, trying not to go go deep enough to touchthe ABS. Don't try to force it, it will eventually come with little effort. This leave the shank of the rivet in the hole, that cane then be pushed out using a smaller drill. It leaves the hole in the ABS at 1/8 (provided you didn't go down too deep) that you can re-use. Easy... If you used a blind/pull through rivet to start with, it already has a hole in the head to use as a starting point... Have done this many times, without damaging ABS and reused the same hole later. SethB6025
Caomhanach explained it better than me. That's all you need to do.

Caomhanach
Always an honor to oblige. I'm glad I can finally give advice rather than asking for it all the time...
TD2802
Thanks to my fellow GT trooper Caomhanach. Hope to see an actual demo at our next armor party!
