I also hollowed out the front sight, chopped the tip of the scope off and replaced it with a "less wrong" bit on the end. As for weathering I use a silver/gunmetal base coat and then a matte black topcoat. When handling the gun it wears in a natural pattern! I did the same with mine but a little different weathering trick - I did black paint all the way - then used a paint touchup pen (with the ball point) to go over the edges and add some silver paint exposed much similar to yours.
