Aside from bending your own aluminum frame, the vintage boy scout ones are the best and most accurate alternative. They're also light and strong. In the newest "Making of..." book, they interviewed one of the original prop makers and he mentioned by name, that they used boy scout back pack frames. He also talks about how they made the main boxes, and how they got the pauldrons - George asked for a way to tell the ranks apart.
