I thought I read where it came from at one time, T from the TK and the D for desert. I was watching the commentaries on the blu ray for "Anatomy of a dewback" and heard something cool. When making the special edition set they came up with names for shots so they knew where to add stuff. Instead of shot 200 or 205. The "look sir droids" scene got the shot sequence called TD 1, TD 2, and TD 3 for "Tattooine Dune". I just thought it was neat that our TD designation has more tie ins with the films then I thought.
