Accurate TD neackseals.

Recommended Posts

So... I have studied many many reference pictures, builds, tutorials, and more for almost every single piece of prop and armor for TDs, but it seems that a very forgotten part is the neckseal.

It has been left aside in many discussions, even it was not mentioned in our own CRL for some time (now it is).

I was looking at threads about the neackseal over the FISD, and found that maybe the TDs had different neckseals from the ones we think are accurate for TKs (but actually, only for hero TKs).

I guess lots of ppl know this already, but I didnt, and Im guessing lots of newer guys dont know that either... so.

As you can see, TKs neckseals doesnt have the low cut for the chin, only Hero ones have it.

But then, I dont know if Sandies have the low cut or not.

What do you guys think?

And how many ribs could there be on the neckseal. I have read that there are 9 on the front and 14 on the back of a hero. Should it be 14 all around for a "stunt"???

Any ideas or actual facts here?

Good thoughts man.

I always thought they were different than the "Hero" neck seal. But my bet is they're pretty much the stunt neck seal.

The fact is you're right, they could be something completely different as the production crew could've just been using anything they had laying around. In other words they COULD have possibly put the helmets on, started to film the first scene, and realized "These guys need something around their necks!" It could've been last minute which turned into finished product later on.

Of course there's a lot that goes against that theory... but we just don't know.

Or I don't at least.

All that said, my bet is they're the same as stunt.

Yes, I think too that they most likely are the same as Stunt TKs... but hey, maybe there is some new info unveiled. ;)

hehehe

Good topic Juan, i have been thinking about the same issue for some time...

but to be honest, i do not have a answer to it.

I guess like the rest of the suits in ANH, there was different versions made.

Not planed as versions, just human mistakes there made them as different versions back then i guess.

(like e.g the helmets, different looks/size and shape, tube stripes etc)

I think the TD's had the straight cut and the Heroes had the top rib cut short only because Han and Luke were the only stormtroopers who took their helmets off in front of the camera. So, I think the costume crew said, let's pimp-out these seals.

About the rib count, I still count 10 ribs including the cut rib on top. I'm going to make a few, maybe half a dozen chin cut neckseals and see what they look like. I bought a different type of material that looks dead-on to Han and Luke's neckseals. I'ts the same material only thicker and not that shiny. It still has a shine to it but does not have a "wet look" if that makes any sence. Dead-on look. I can't wait to get this material to my seamstress. I'll ship the material out to her today. She can make half a dozen in a day. I'll expect to receive them by Monday October 4th.

A little photoshop goes a long way:

Red is what I can see.

Green is what I think connects the rings I can see.

Blue is what I think is under a folding in the neckseal.

So, thats 14 ribs on the back, 7 on the front for Luke.

If this was custom made, Han's should be a bit taller.

You're counting the number of ribs when the neckseal is compressed in the front and the rear is stretched out. The neckseal collapses when you look down like Han and Luke in the photo you photoshopped. If you look at the photo where Luke is looking up at Han or the photo where both Han and Luke are looking forward, you will count 9 ribs and the tenth would be the short rib.

My neckseals have 9mm ribs, the height of the 10 ribs is 83mm. Now if I make a neckseal with the same size of ribs(9mm) and I add 14 ribs at the rear and 7 at the front, you will have a neckseal that measures 50mm at the front and 120mm at the rear. 50mm would not reach the bottom of the adams apple and 120mm would reach up to the same height as the middle of the ear. If you would put the neckseal on a flat surface, the neckseal would look awkward and not tapered. I'm sorry to dissagree but that does not add up to a screen accurate seal.
