TX3828 Posted June 26, 2007 Share Posted June 26, 2007 Fist I would like to thank everyone here for posting the suits they have completed and how they did them. For my TD I used a couple of different methods to get the effect I was looking for. This whole build and weathering took place over three days. I started off with a set of RT-MOD and had the ab modded for a TD. I used burnt umber and the dawb method for all of the parts. Following the instructions from the same thread, I first used paper towel to wipe off the excess. This proved to be harder than I thought. I switched to a damp face cloth from the bathroom across from my den and was very impressed at the results. That was the last of the paint method I used. I did this build while home on leave from Afghanistan. With that being said I brought back 500ml of real desert sand. I boiled it and let it dry on its own. Next I ground up about half of the sand in a mortor to get the fine dust that coats everything there. This is where boiling the sand helped, it crushed up very easy. Next using a very high grade spray booth, I coated one part at a time with very tacky hair spary (guys ask your ladies what is the worst stuff out there and use that). Next in a large trash bag I placed the part and poured the sand over the sprayed areas. Once I had finished coating the last part, the first was dry and ready to be "cleanedoff". For this I used the same facecloth from the paint step. My wife wasn't too happy about the use of the first one and not willing to ruin a second. Guys don't use whatever is handy in the bathroom. The last step was to head out to the garage and seal the sand and paint. For this I used a clear coat spry with a matt finish. I did two coats and used a hairdryer inbetween to help with the getting all of the cracks and to speed up the dry time. There was a trooping for MS the next day I wanted to goto. So after all was said and done, this was the result. Once again, a big thanks to all who have posted and please feel free to make suggestions. The hairspry is just used to get the sand to stick long enough to hold it for the wipe stage. Once I got the look I wanted I sealed the parts with a clear matt spray. I have rubbed it real well and its like tough sand paper. the added sand does not come off. I did try a few methods on one of the hand plate to see if I would be able to get it off if I wanted to change the look. I found that soaking the part in warm water for a few hours allowed me to scrub it off with a cloth, but again as it is its not comming off with a bump or by brushing along something.
