My most ambitious project yet, a TD Build - from Scratch

Hi guys

After a frustrating six months, Ive managed to complete my Lid, I made it myself from scratch, well with a little help (Thats another story!). Anyway, its complete, have a few to experiment with, so not that worried about ruining it when it comes to weathering!

The Dream:

I have always wanted the complete sandtrooper team, in my hallway! Accurate down to the smallest details and even the individual helmet set ups and the way they were painted, the different characters.

So I thought: "Why not?" A chance incident last year triggered me into action, so here we go, one at a time.

I've started with my Fav - the 'Move Along' Stormtrooper. I now have a lid im happy with (havent weathered it yet, still researching). Next up is my from scratch armour build, I have all the necessary equipment and experience to vac these (Guys I am not here in any kind of touting for work way, I genuinely would fully appreciate the help and advice on my builds and will only ever talk about the build in this thread please.) I should have the pauldron soonish, so this may be an ongoing thread, plz be patient with me and I'll post up pics as and when i get them!.

Lid: (Apologies if the pics are a bit big?)useface_zpsbd15334b.jpgfrontclassic_zps58211b9e.jpgback34_zps7aeb21f1.jpg

Could be a long project... the lid only took six months lol

I think the armour build should be straight forward... its the Back packs and detailing that may trip me u, so was hoping guys you could help me out! know theres some great articles on here so I'll be studying them too. Think once ive got the molds i can just pull and weather them, so should be a relatively quicker process after that point, will get back to you all about july/August !

Anything you can help with in the mean time - im all ears!

thanks in advance, mac

PS - Know I have the wrong screws in the ears, and forgot the black line round it! both have been fixed now.

Hi all

Yes has been a very frustrating project. I started with a raw lump, thousands of measurements and drawings, mostly of the Move Along guy.

Molds can be very deceptive, Id carved out what I thought was a pretty good shape, how wrong I was!. (See top Left).

Had about five transitions to this, had a fair bit of trouble with the tubes, as they look different from many different angles and very difficult to capture in 3d.

My help came in the form of a graduate art student, who (Big thanks owing) helped me nail the final version, now have a fully effective technique from carving 3d objects from scratch now, so will be hopefully building my armour molds for my sandies sometime soon.

Items such as the guns, I can build the T-72 as did one before, will more than likely buy the E-11s, but the MG34's still scratching my head about.

I know this may be an ambitious project, so taking it steady and one trooper at a time!... may end up buying the back packs to, or in bits.

That's a story I want to read.

I think Paul, you mean the little help Mac had, right? The help that started all this and came long before the art student.

I asked him over at the FISD about that point....

Mac, why don´t you tell the troopers here, what the base of your mould is? Maybe you got some pictures of the helmet you moulded?

You know, some people are primary on the FISD, but sometimes they read over here on MEPD and they find it ... disturbing, that your story here is a slightly different one.

I came in here hoping for a little genuine help guys. I was alerted to Fisd (I never actually went there with my project) when i was accused of being a recaster/forger, which anyone in their right mind can see i am not, and i am deeply insulted that people were so **** bent on proving, It is true my mold originated from some sections of a damaged original, which is why I got my face angle wrong initially. I fully know whats going to happen here now, instead of help, ill be swamped with accusations and demands for photo's!

Oh well, well my full project is going ahead anyway, just hoped a little help along the way and a chance to share with you would have been good. I never asked for anymore or less.

Ntw.

And as for the art student? lol am i now deprived freedom of speech to tell other parts of my story, how about the other bits of the story, if i add that in now does that make me a liar? unbelievable!

And to those of you that hopefully treat me with an ounce of respect, Ill respond accordingly and will share anything with you. Many thanks minuteman, your attitude is as such that I doubt I'll bother with FISD again, you have been instrumental from the outset in levelling the first accusation 'probably some guy set up a site and trying to make some easy money.' thanks very much for that. This project has not been easy, and i have worked very ******* it, only to have somebody like yourself trying to ruin it, i detect a pang of jealousy there sir.

Well either way, mid year or so, my sandy team will be finished/almost finished, im sure you will all see the pics.

Will leave it up to those with reasonable judgement to work this out.

Thanks

John

A little update on the lids. Pulled my move along lid, and after yet more critical analysis, spotted a few tiny bits, so back to the mold with filler. Quick update to show guys what this project has been from the outset, will quit when im happy with it (almost there.)

Adjusted the slight depressions under the bottom of the mouth frown, and re-instated my flanges underneath which the s-trim sits on, dont know what it looks like yet in white plastic, hope to see during the week.

Been looking at orange pauldrons for the next bit, will also try and capture the 'Look sir droids' trooper lid next to him maybe this week to.

Sorry may be a pic heavy thread during these builds.todaysproject_zps666a9a86.jpg

he's a tricky fellow to nail... does anyone know if the famous crack in his left tube (as you look at the helmet) distorted the tube as it appears to be fatter nearer the chin than the other stunts ive seen, they taper in towards the chin?

Dont take it the wrong way mac..recasting is a bad word......i feel your pain of getting it right.TM is the guy to ask.he has helped me along the way....well more like held my hand...lol......do it for you! I mean **** if TM would give me a set of armor i would recast it in a second...so i can have a set for everyday of the week...but no set for me...i have tried!so back to my hole...kids armor is what i do....i think i am the only one in the states and TM is in the UK....so if a bunch of peoplr start selling kids sets you know recasting is going on....i do it becouse i love the challenges envolved in this art....never done it before and i have fallen back to people here and on white armor...And i find if you recast to just get stsrted let it be knone.....i really TM would give me a set of armor......if i rambled on its becouse its late and i have not slept in 3 days dye to plowing snow

Looking really good!

Sorry to hear about your experience over the FISD.

Even if over here you will find the same passion for armor and accuracy, one thing you will not find easily is that passion aimed towards making other members fell bad or feel lesser.

I also have to say that there are some top guys over there, a lot actually. But yeah, it can become too hot sometimes when discussing armor and moulds.

Feel free to share your progress and I would anyway suggest you to post as much pictures as possible cause we do like pictures, and cause that way you will be showing and sharing your hard work and not leaving anything to assumptions.

Also, there might not be so many armor making experts here, but we are very proud on our accuracy building and detailing skills...

Lets go on with this, and if any controversies should rise, hope we can all benefit from the discussion that might happen. Just lets keep it friendly.

Saludos.

Maybe check out the SWAT threads replicating the move along trooper. You might find some useful research and even inspiration.

:)

Decided on a project within a project if that makes any sense, I came across the disney helmet while surfin about as you do... just building the mechanical internals, aim to cast them all in latex (padding) and resin for the voice/breathing module, air processors etc... going in my move along bucket when done, and the rest as i go along!

Will get some pics up!

PS sorry not been able to post as much as i wanted recently, will have a pic sess any time soon.
