  1. I never asked the guy where he got them from but I assume he purchased large overstock from small time shops here and there. Plus I imaging some of the stuff comes from used bathroom parts. But the syphon I have is old but not used as Machine said. Looks too authentically aged to be a recast.

The reason I decided on the small one was because I thought the long pipe part on the screen used syphon is not even length if you compare the top half and the bottom half. Plus I also considered the measurements of Big Reds sonix radio which measures 240mm . That is just about the same length as the smaller syphon from the bottom flange to the top seam line . Not sure the radio measurements are 100% proof but I tried to use those two references. Also Machine posted some great photos with relative proportions on the screen packs and I felt the smaller one looked about the same.

Of course I do agree at times the longer one looks better and probably more accurate. :)

I did plumbing for a short time and I never would have thought vintage toilet parts would be so exciting to find! I love this crazy hobby!

  2. Thanks Strider. I do feel bad not being able to share this with the greater community sooner but I hold hope more stock of these syphons will be found at Broken Bog. I was able to get the shorter version not the longer one. Hard to tell which one is closest to the screen use ones but I think either is a great one to have for a field pack.

  3. I was able to find a UK vintage bathroom supplier who had a limited stock of these vintage toilet syphons. It was a lot of work and communication to finally get one in hand.

Please go to BrokenBog.com and contact Sam Powel regarding the syphons. He knows what we are looking for and may still have a few left. He has a huge property full of vintage bathroom supplies and it took him a few months to collect just several of them from his stock. Sam seems to be a busy guy so please be ready to wait for his replies. Often he is so busy he never gets back to you but if you send a reminder here and there he will respond. I eventually called him from Japan and he was really helpful on the phone. I would warn though not to overload him with tons of requests as he may all together not be as willing to help our cause which is why I originally refrained from posting this info.

Hope he can find more for anyone looking for one. Good luck!

  4. Hey guys, i received this couple of days ago!

    Photo%20Jan%2012%203%2031%2047%20PM.jpg

I don't know how accurate this is in size compare to the Gio Canteens, so here's my rough comparison using my Crashmann's radio faceplate and screenshot

    th_image_1.png

And with ruler...according to Seller of the Gio canteen on etsy, it measures 5,5"-7,5"

This one a bit less than that

    th_Photo%20Jan%2012%203%2041%2045%20PM%2

    Comparison with the original Gio

The lid is different but it shouldn't be a problem. The cap chain hook also located differently, the label dentation too, but not so much, or maybe just because of the photo. Everything else is OK to me!!

Thanks again Brian for pointing out!! :salute:

I'm unable to manage go to the supplier over the weekend because the store is closed, i'll try to juggle around during week days

Looks good ! Happy to see you could order one and post info on it. Excited to hear if you manage to get in touch with the supplier soon. Keep me posted!

I have a few original Gio style canteens but definitely want one of the new canteens to compare and also mod for my pack.

  5. Supplier for the Lion Star? That's great!

Can you compare the two when you get yours with the original Gio? I wonder if they had differences in sizes etc

That link is one f the retailers i found online, and looks like its for real, i'm testing it by buying one first, still waiting for their confirmation for the availability then head for payment. Thanks for the info Brian!

If i got another supplier i'll be in touch, and see how they manage a overseas shipping or i'll send them myself.

And also if they're similar(except for the marking) with the original ones.

Sorry about the language  , thought the website is available to translate with google

    Be right back

    Edit:

Just called one of the suppliers, they have 1 box of them, that's 6 dozens mind you :woot:

hopefully i can come and see it for myself this weekend

Thanks. Silly me, I always forget you can use google to translate pages.

6 dozen, is, that is sure a lot of canteens! Can't wait to hear what you can buy. Keep me posted! Might be a few members in my garrison interested in some including myself!!!

    Good luck!

  6. :icon_eek::icon_eek::icon_eek:

    Will look into it guys!!

    Edit:

    Can you guys view this?

They sell it for 56.400 rupiah for 1 canteen, and 51.400 rupiah for 12 canteens

Thats approx. will cost you $4.07 for 1, and $3.71 for 12 canteens outside s&h

I'll find some info tomorrow during work hour

Thank you Erik if you can look into this. I found the supplier last year but no luck getting anything shipped out unless it was a a whole shipping container full. Yeah, it is quite cheap for sure if we can get them.if you can buy any cheaply, please let me know. Would love to buy a few.

    Good luck!

Please do message me if you have good news! Cheers!

By the way, yes I can open and view the web link you posted. But obviously the language is nothing I can read!

  7. There is a rule you broke by posting this. Under MEPD code 4.315 you are guilty of making other members severely jealous. The penalty is confiscation of your arms but I will accept for you to turn yourself in and surrender that awesome beast of a weapon.

All jokes aside, crazy cool Rt-97c. Love all the details you added. Fantastic work putting it all together.

  8. Starting this thread to post any parts or items I have found to be of interest for field backpack builds. I already started 2 other topics ( frames and radio research) but thought its best to just create one topic that addresses them all, plus I didn't know how to edit the previous topic subject headings (apologies!)

I will post more items if I find anything else that might be worth sharing. For now here is all I have:

    Exhaust port main body alternatives-

Found some outdoor electrical outlet covers at the home center that sort of have the shape of the exhaust port on screen. Edges are too square but it can be worked on.

    image.jpg2_zps4btv4gkv.jpg image.jpg1_zpsftx3lbij.jpg

Dollar store/yen shop outlet cover protectors for childproofing your homes- again not perfect, has an opening on the bottom side for plugs but that can be sealed up. Size is smaller that the item posted above.

    image.jpg1_zpsdmk54nyw.jpg image.jpg2_zpsbhlbshsw.jpg

Cut up and reassembled plastic pencil/stationary holder - a bit of cutting , gluing and epoxy & sanding but the general shape can be achieved. This is slightly larger than both items posted above. A bit wide but it can be cut and reassembled the make it narrow. image.jpg3_zpsr35lfxmi.jpg

    image.jpg1_zps9kpycuim.jpg

Really hard to find the perfect shape but hopefully these might come close.

Finding mounting feet has been difficult, probably best to hand make them.

  9. I love the switch idea and will try it when I get my radio in the works. But for my kids jawa costumes I bought cables with an ON/OFF switch as seen below. Works well.

    image.jpg1_zpslcspi93p.jpg

Just a suggestion for anyone afraid to work with electronics like myself.

Thanks again Lee for the MP3 module idea and set up. Best plug and play set up I have seen and super cheap!

  10. This image might help . I think you can sort of see the bottom tray just behind the mortar tube, single tape line???

    autographE4Sandtrooper_zpskklyvnma.jpg

For the top taped area, when I look at this photo, it looks like the tape is in fact one wider sized tape used in these photographs. The light plays tricks with the shadows.

    160009u3a08uotmcfg8kbo_zpsmqt65dav.jpg

Someone played with the lighting in this photo so you can see the smooth surfaces better, lights & darks.

If you look closely at how the tape wraps around the edge of the seed tray, it appears to be one smooth wider piece of tape with no break lines.

    star_wars_sandtrooper_wall_3_by_jkno4u-d

Another possibility of what we are seeing is a wider taped used first then a thinner taped wrapped once around. For me that seems to be what I am seeing when analysing both angles represented.

Sorry I think I am adding more uncertainty into the mix. The photo I posted in post 131 does look like the tape was wrapped a few times around the top part of the seed tray, whether its just the thin tape or a combination of both. One other way to create a case for the tape is to look at all the packs and see what size tape was used on them all if possible. That would give the general idea of what may have been used solely or reveal the possibility for a wider size tape used. Haven't yet studied the other packs so maybe veteran members can lend their knowledge on this.

Shotgun shells look amazing. Love the supports you made for them and the central wires extending out.

  11. This is very interesting... I have been in Scouting since 1986, and at least to the stores ive been, they never carry one single kind of pack or even one single brand. So, even if they got the frame fro. A boy scouts shop in London, you could easily find any camping brand there. Also, people just tend to say "boy scout" to mean pretty much any camping or amateur oitdoors activity, specialy a few years ago... So, the posibilities are just infinite I guess. Saludos.

Thanks. Its been fun looking all over the web and reading all the interesting history these packs have and where they came from. You are probably right about that guy just saying it was a boy scout shop, maybe was an outdoor specialty shop.
