Nice project. Do you do a slush casting to get a hollow cast? For the light socket bulbs you probably have to pressure cast them to get them really transparent and without bubbles.

Thank you Strider. Originally I started by slush casting but found it inconsistent since I was rotating the molds by hand. I planned on making a rotocasting machine but with no space at home I had to rethink a better way. Slush casting also limited my hopes of making the parts fit together like the original scope parts do.  I make a 3 part mold with minimal seem lines. It is easy to use but it took a great deal of trial and error to perfect the molds.......and money:sad:. It also takes me a 3-4 days to prep a new mold.  The end result is a fairly clean carbon copy of the scope both outside and inside just like the originals.

For the light port bulb I do not have a pressure chamber for casting or a vacuum chamber for the silicone mold. So I am left with little choice on making these to spec. Getting them bubble free is tedious work but it pays off. I use a resin that has a pot life of 100 minutes so its easy to take my time. I mix thoroughly for 10 minutes, pour the resin into a tin foil pan and apply a heat gun to the surface to knock out more bubbles, then let it sit for a 5 minutes or so. Pour into molds and then remove the big bubbles with a toothpick. I then check over a 2 hour period for any new bubbles before joining the two mold halves. Then its a 3 day wait to cure!  Had 2 successful batches so far.

  2. Just thought to post this here if some members here do not venture onto the FISD or RPF forums. Been working on making hollow resin scopes from my collection. Lots of trial and error along the way but starting to get better results.  Hoping to use the M38 version on my blaster when I get to that point. Still putting my armor and pack together.

Posted above are test castings of the M19 light port bulb. Hardest part to cast so far but finally reached successful results. Almost no visible bubbles!!!! The M19 is not used on Bapty blasters but thought it might be of some interest for any members who are looking for an M19 for other blasters in their collection.

Both the M38 and M19 scope cylinders and all the smaller parts have been molded and casted. Some smaller parts need to be re-molded to get better results but as is, they kit is almost ready. Now in the process of casting and stocking parts to prepare complete kits and still awaiting some screws to arrive. Most of the parts screw together smoothly like the real scopes, some require a bit of sanding and persuasion.

Please feel free to add any comments or ask questions if you have any. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I found small shop in Tokyo that sells similar radio antennas like the Sonix had, they extend and pivot half way. The tip might be a bit different. Cost was about $20.00 if I remember correctly.

Rolf, very interested in these Brexton boxes. Hope there are more floating around for sale. Do you have measurements for them?

I have only found the 3 ribs type but frankly the only pack that had the 5 ribs one for the lower trays was the move along trooper. All others had the 3 rib type for top and bottom seed trays. No, at the moment I don't plan doing any sales offerings. But let's see.

I've also made a new and more accurate mold for the exhaust port and for the mushroom caps. I'll show it when I do my WIP ;-)

Great. Looking forward to seeing your WIP!

The dimensions are a bit different compared to the trays currently made. I was going to show everything in a WIP for my new backpack but other projects have interfered so far. But I'll start it definitively in the next couple of months.

That is great. I have held off buying seed trays as they continue to change in Size with newer develops like the frame size. Can't wait to see your trays. You found both top and bottom variants? Planning to have them replicated for sales?

After the trays I am looking to make a more accurate exhaust port part. That could be 3D modeled But i might make it from scratch. i have no skills to 3D model yet or a PC to do it on.LOL! For this syphon though, you might be right about the complexity and hight cost to produce. The gears are turning so maybe I can find a good solution. Not in it for profit, even break even is fine, just want to help others if they want a casted one from an original syphon.

    Hey Bulldog,

thanks for your efforts on this. To be honest I think casting this thing correctly and with a minimum weight is firstly quite complicated and secondly very expensive. By my estimate you would at least charge 100 usd per syphon to break even. And you have the risk that is doesn't work at all. Moreover, I don't think there would be much demand at that price and I'm lacking the fantasy how it could be done much cheaper or easier. Btw, after having discovered some correct vintage seed trays I also think the smaller syphon is a better fit.

    Cheers

Vintage seed trays? gotta see these. Have any pics? Dimensions to match current trays being made? Very cool.

Yeah, I worried after I bought my syphon that O risked it on the smaller one but I did tireless looks at the screenshots and did conclude on the roadblock pack it looks like the shorter version.

Has anyone tried to mold/cast one of these yet? If done correctly it can likely be cast to the same weight as the real ones, possibly even lighter. I know its not quite the same, but these are the closest to the ones used we have found and if there were casts available im sure it would help lots of folks out that dont want to wait, and dig, or would rather have a cast of this one than the one Gordon is offering. Just a thought...

...another thought.... if anyone has one they would lend me to cast, i would gladly do it and offer them at a reasonable price if its not already being done and i missed it.

I am considering to cast my vintage syphon but it is not a 100% exact match to the screen used ones. It is the shorter version of the two I posted. I believe the shorter one is closer to the screen used ones. The top half & bottom half of the long pipe part are not equal in length. The top half is shorter.

This would require a lot of silicone to cast so I am weighing the worth of even trying. Might be a money pit to try. I have a few ideas on casting it to make it close to the actual syphon but would require some time to make the mold as such. If others are interested, I might have a go at this only if there is enough demand.

WE BOUGHT THE RADIO................................AWESOME!    Gino and I purchased the radio and will definitely be offering castings.  We should have it in hand early next week. We will be offering a kit with the knobs, strap holders and faceplate. All parts will be pressure cast. The price will be reasonable to make this available for everyone. This is a grail piece and to price it sky high would be understandable but we feel that something this integral to the Sandtrooper would be better suited priced to make it attainable by everyone.

We will be posting the official sign up thread in a few days.

    Woodman

Sorry I missed the update. Congratulations if you got it. That is great news to hear it will be casted and made available for a reasonable price. That was my deepest concern to have someone buy it then keep it hidden away or make kits at a high price that is out of reach to most.

Very excited to see more photos of this beauty and certainly add me to the interest list when you get it going. Cheers!
