SAN FRANCISCO — A steady stream of Darth Vaders, Princess Leias, Boba Fetts and, of course, Stormtroopers descended on AT&T Park here Sunday as the world-champion San Francisco Giants played host to the Empire for Star Wars Day.

In a city known for its geek fascinations, seeing Jedi mix with hard-core baseball fans is not an uncommon occurrence, but the Giants' game against the Arizona Diamondbacks was the first-ever Star Wars Day for the franchise.

And the team went all-out. Fans got a pre-game costume contest, a post-game screening of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back in the stadium, Stormtroopers guarding the field during the "Star-Spangled Banner," giveaway statues of Giants closing pitcher Brian Wilson — frozen in carbonite, Han Solo-style — and the opportunity to generally geek out throughout the game.

"We don't even know what the score is," said 33-year-old Ryan Flores, above right, who came in a Giants bounty hunter uniform. Flores told Wired.com that he and his Boba-Fett-meets-Giants-costumed friend, Robin Lopez, 31 (above left), were distracted from the game's play-by-play due to fans wanting pictures with the pair.

Not that Flores minded. He noted that he and Lopez had been happy to take pictures, making them each a Star for the day.

"I'm a geek and if I can make a little kid smile, that makes my day," Flores said.

During the game, Giants players were shown in Jedi garb in their photos on the stadium's giant screen. Between innings, the park showed Star Wars clips, including one featuring the team's mascot, Lou Seal, inserted into key scenes from the film franchise — changes that went over better with fans than last week's addition of Darth Vader screaming "No!" in the upcoming Blu-ray version of Return of the Jedi.

In the end, though, the Force was stronger with Star Wars fans than with the Giants, who lost to the Diamondbacks 4-1 after an 8th-inning rally by the Arizona team.

I was the TD on the field...it was an awesome experience.

The Golden gate garrison had about 10-15 members there in various costumes.

  2. So I just wanted to take a moment a recognize some of the amazing things that Ive witnessed within the MEPD.

I have to say that IMHO the MEPD has really come a long way over the past few years....I look at all the "deployment" threads and every one is just AMAZING. You have really put so much thought and time into your submissions and it really shows. GREAT JOB!! This has really helped raise the bar to a level of excellence. Thanks Juan for doing such a super job helping guide our future through the process...your evaluations are spot on. :salute:

The webpage layout has become very user friendly and is loaded with great tutorials, links and just an overall welcoming feel to it...When I first came to the site, it was great...now its just freakin FANTASTIC!!!! Thanks Bluey for putting so much time into getting it right and having an open door that allows everyone to provide input and feedback on its future. :salute:

And as for the rest of you...you ALL are honestly some of the best people Ive met ...always willing to help out a fellow member and do your part to get them to the next level. Weather its guidance through personal issues or how to put your armor on, you stand tall and offer your hand. You have amazing hearts and Im proud to serve along side every single one of you. :salute:

Anyway, Have a great day my friends.... :salute: :salute: :salute:

We cant forget to include you Mr. Dirty in the roll of awesome troopers here!

  3. 50 bucks? well thats ALOT lower than I expected XD Thats completely do-able. I'm just checking up on Fed Ex now myself. Still won't be able to make any kind of a buy until I get my call for training anyhow (want to make sure I know income will be steady first :D) Though ATA did give me a quote today too which wasn't bad at all :)

ATA is by far the best deal out there i think.

  4. I sent a mail to ATA inquiring about their stuff....my one worry though is shipping across the border to Canada. Won't that be killer? Then again I haven't really ordered anything large to be shipped before like that, which is why I was leaning to Canada side makers....I suppose I should find out about shipping costs too eh?

Yup. AP to USA was only like $45 or 50 i think

  5. Hmm...well I'm about 5'11" 185 lbs. I have a 32" waist and leg...and I need a belt with 32" jeans so, I presume I would be okay with something like AP armor. Though with zero experience modifying things like this and no one in my province who has any either (that I know anyway) I would like to snag a kit that doesn't require alot of changing....outside trimming and dirtying up and assembly.

In anycase it narrows things down alot when the time comes :) thanks for the advice! I'll have to check out that link again too.

You will probably be fine with ATA or AP. AP fits me like a glove, so if you are bigger it may be kind of tight.

  6. I personally feel that the armor quality is better with AP than with the ATA suit. The helmet issues Panda brings up are true, but overall i feel the AP armor is better (i own both AP and ATA). But, the ATA was an easier build.

However, 1 thing that biases my view is i am pretty skinny (5'11" and 155lbs) so the AP armor fits me like a glove. I had to trim down the ATA suit a TON to get it to fit. I could easily have fit it if i was more like 200lbs.

  7. So yesterday I made a small error. I was taking my bucket with me to Dani's mom's house to work on installing the lenses. I loaded the bucket in the car and loaded the kids. I had my lenses, the lense frames, my tube of e-6000, and my $9 bottle of slow zap in a ziplock bag. I made a stop at the hardware store to grab something and when I got out, there was no bag. Yeah, left it on top of the car as I was getting the kids in their seats. It was on the road, lenses shattered, glue everywhere, everything ruined. :(

As I was contemplating cutting new lenses, I decided to make it a one piece setup so I could just use the screws holding the ears on to hold the lenses in and not have to worry about building a way to mount them.

You can't really even tell they are in there but they are. I might put some green acetate in front of the lenses to make them more green. Now all I need is my neck trim to arrive and to add some foam to get it to fit me a little better, and I should be good to go.

Edit: Do the tops of the eye holes need trimmed a bit?

    Yeah, i would trim more

  8. How to put 200 Lbs of crap in a 50 lb bag....

    Man its tight....

Arghhh!!! I over trimmed my thighs on the outside radius!. I will probably have to do the thighs over..

I always have to trim alot because I am only 5'8" tall but I hide it better usually...

Getting closer. Comic-Con is only a few weeks away. Better move my butt!!!

I got mostly everything assembled here. Got my hand guards from Karin. Still waiting on my pack. Still need a gun.

    Which Pauldron?? Orange or White???

Great to see you over on the dirty side, Mike!

Looking good so far. You might just be able to blend that top edge and pull the thighs up higher...but not sure without seeing it in person

  9. Damon

Be sure to hook up with the Central California garrison of the 501st. Great bunch of troopers there. Also, dont be shy to pop in and say hi at the Golden Gate Garrison (NorCal) as well!

Also, i would recommend setting up your account over at whitearmor.net as well. That is the site for normal stormtroopers and there is much good build advice available there as well!
