  1. That is a great piece of radio history. Nice find.
  2. Great idea indeed! there are reusable zip ties so you don't have to keep cut & replacing. http://www.actfs.com/CatalogProducts.asp?nProductsID=102
  3. Thanks Rolf & Rick. Hopefully this is what they used and looks the part when its all painted and installed. Rick, If I get back to NY this summer I will take one with me . I did buy another 1000 ml canteen from Etsy which looks like the exact same canteen but made by another company. Looks good too but haven't yet got to see in person. From the looks of all the screenshots I referred to, the 600ml canteen looks correct for most of the packs but the1000 ml could have been used on one pack from what I can make out. And sorry I never got back to posting about my dad' s return trip to Home Depot for more faucet covers. He told me they were not the rounded ones but as you mentioned the squarish ones.
  4. Thanks Michael. I hope to get my pack underway soon and use the canteen. I am thinking of making resin copies of the top section for members who want to add that to their faucet covers for extra detail. Or even better, I'd like to cast full copies with the option to smoothen out the textured area for more accuracy. Vince , it would be interesting if this turns out to be in fact what was used. another mystery solved if so. I am making no 100% claim on this but just think the canteens look the part.
  5. Originally TK0600 posted that the bee stinger part might actually be a water canteen. Comparing the screenshots and the canteen he suggested, I thought they matched extremely well. I agree with the point that the texture was not consistent with what we can see on screen but the shape, lines and curvatures are almost identical. I looked on the net for some of those retro canteens and found a few sellers. One in Austria and one in Croatia. Huge thanks to a super FISD member who helped me purchase one from the Austrian seller and a special thanks to an extremely nice guy from Croatia, I have a few of these canteens in hand. Here they are: The 600ml canteen side by side with a faucet cover: Here is a screenshot that really shows how close these canteens look to the real pack part.: Even if they are not the exact same canteens used, I think they are darn close. Let me know what you think.
  6. Love it! Not even close to becoming a Sandy yet but when I do, I would to earn a patch like this if I build a Bapty e-11. Version 2 is my favorite. Great work!
  7. Very cool! Great idea using the mic tip screws to mount the bracket. How is the airflow? Noise?
  8. Thanks for the Salo lead. I just sent a email to scifi signers. Com and hope they might be able to pass on the message for me. I am still keeping some hope for a prop maker contact as I have read other stories of people finding out crew contacts for movies like The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. I agree the sources might already have dried up but just a small hint as to what or where certain things came from would be fun to know. I am currently stuck on shotgun-like shell shapes on the road block pack.
  9. From the photos I have looked at and from freeze framing the movie in HD, I noticed the cylinders are not hollow but seem to have something inside. You can barely make out something centered in each of the cylinders. The pics I attached are the ones I have been looking at closely. they seem to have a part slightly protruding from the end of each. I thought they might have been a kind of battery or a large electronic capacitor/ resistor. The last photo is the best shot I found that shows they might not be hollow. If they were hollow, the white plate on the pipe would be more visible to see on the top 3 cylinders.
  10. I was wondering if anyone has had any success in researching and contacting original ANH crew members from the art department, especially any people who worked on sourcing materials and building the backpacks, etc. Brian Muir has a been a great help to RS props. i would imagine there is a possibility some other art department members may be able to answer some questions if they could be contacted somehow.
  11. Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I was thinking they might work for my own pack but like both of you said, work is required to get them anywhere close. I will check out more SWAT threads once I get my pack build underway. I am an MEPD novice and probably this stuff has already been discussed a ton already. Sorry for kicking up any unnecessary sand.
  12. I thought the shape of these toy wolf whistles look pretty close to the shape of those parts seen on the screen. Obviously these are not smooth cylinders due to the three molded rings but both ends flare up at each end. Not sure about the size of these as well but I remember as a kid they were about 2-3 inches in length. Highly doubt they used these for the original pack but just thought to throw it out there. Any opinions?
  13. Still waiting on my dad to report back on any stock at the local Home Depot. Quartermaster, that is a great purchase. I was just researching how to do hollow casting and came across slush casting. It is similar to slip casting for ceramics. Just mold the object in silicone, pour enough resin in the mold to build a desired thickness, seal the mold and rotate the mold for a specific time until it cures. Just have to stand there and keep rotating the mold by hand or you can build a rotating rack to evenly apply the resin inside the mold (see picture number #2. After that, some foam-hardening filler can be injected to prevent any collapsing. I never tried molding /casting yet but this seems like a good idea to keep resin cost down and keep it light weight & somewhat less breakable. #2
  14. Sorry for not updating sooner. My dad went to Home Depot but he picked up the wrong one. He will make a trip back there this week and see if they have the correct one you are all looking for. John, that is good news you got some on Long Island. I am sure there are few home centers that still have some stock lurking around.
  15. My dad is going to Home Depot tomorrow to have a look for me. If they have them I will post asap. From what I remember last summer, there was a ton of them in a box all covered in dust. Hoping the cold winter didn't clean out their inventory.
  16. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded-Hard-Faucet-Cover-1951/100314242 I checked online and the Home Depot in Copaigue, New York has 174 units in stock .also 151 in stock at the Farmingdale ,NY Home Depot. Priced at $1.98. I bought one of these last summer and it matched the same size as the light blue faucet cover from Lowes. Hope this helps. Unfortunately it is only sold in store and not on line but perhaps you can call and arrange for them to be shipped. I might be able to ask my family to help out if all other options run out.
  17. The Home Depot I went to last summer (Massapequa, New York) had a whole box full and might still have some. They were a rusty brown color but same shape as the light blue one i found at Lowes in Bayshore New york. I will ask my dad to drop by there this week to check. Out here in Japan there is nothing sold like that part but there are some plastic containers with similar dimensions at the 100 yen shops . Let you know if anything turns up.
  18. Just watched ANH again (sandtrooper parts) in super slow motion about 5 times and I think that it really looks like the same shape and size. The rounded shape and the part that tapers up where the cap would be matches extremely well. The textured area is the only thing that I see to be different. This part of the canteen could be a cheap skin of plastic that might be easily removed revealing a smooth surface underneath.
  19. That is certainly a cool find and new possibility for the bee stinger. Found this after digging a bit based on your find. Same canteen but different maker. The upper cap area looks very convincing on the canteens compared to the original pack stinger.
  20. Looked on ebay and saw a few pouches for sale but none look as good as the ones you bought. Could you PM me the seller on ebay who sold you those?
  21. Looks awesome. I was wondering what materials did you use for the exhaust pipe, specifically the black coil part? I tried to find things like electrical wire casings and vacuum hoses that looked the part but they just don't look accurate enough. Is it black shrink wrap or black tape wrapped over some coils? The original part for this looks something like a flexible tube of some sort. Can't wait to see more progress pics especially of the radio when it is finished!
  22. Thanks Nick for your input. Looking to start my pack build in January. Got everything set to build except this canister and the shotgun shells. Cheers!
  23. Thanks. Actually I suck at metric too but in Japan that is all we have. If you have US measurements for the canisters, that will do.
  24. I already use this water chemical for my fish tanks and thought the container seemed suitable for the top canister but I want to be sure. The container is 26.5 cm round (84cm diameter) and the height is about 21.5 not including the cap. Is this something's I can use for the top canister?
