Hello everyone, I'm new and a bit lost. I hope this isn't too random of a question. I thought I wanted to do a Sandtrooper but have some questions after being (nicely) talked out of this plan. It was suggested I do a Heavy Weapons trooper that can be weathered with charcoal dust, have a heavy blaster and a back pack but still have the drop boxes and can clean up to be a clean TK Stormtrooper for blending in with a group, or for when a back back is a hassle, say at a large convention with crowded floors.
I have a new in box AM armor set. Like I said I planned on doing a Sandtrooper but thought that a Sandy and a Mimban trooper were the same really but with different weathering and backpacks. I know now this is not correct.
I then realized that the Mimban Troopers have a different "Rogue One" helmet that is semetrical and has recessed chin bar stripes as well as a blast shield on the helmet. The Mimban CRL also has drop boxes, which Sandtroopers do not have obviously. If I build a weathered trooper with a ANH helmet and it has drop boxes am I painted into a corner where I cannot be anything other than a HWT?
I guess what I'm asking is, what can I actually do with my AM armor kit? I am from the Pacific Northwest where is always muddy and the Mimban fits the best looks wise in my mind, and freaking love the troopers gear and poncho. Can my AM ANH kit be a Mimban Trooper if I get a different helmet?
I'm kind of overwhelmed, I thought I have this all figured out. What are my options with this kit and should I stick with a Heavy Weapons Trooper/Vanilla ANH Stormtrooper?
Let me start by saying you bought a great kit. I have AM armor and love it. I was at the same point as you 1.5 years ago as far as Heavy Weapons trooper va Sandtrooper. I went Sandtrooper and do not regret it at all. As far as the backpack, remember Sandtroopers do NOT have to have one for basic approval. I did mine with none. I am going to build one this winter and go for level 2 approval. But unlike the Heavy Weapons trooper you can troop with or without the back pack! That was huge for me, and I can’t imagine ever wanting to troop as a vanilla ANH TK, so boring, lol. As far as the Mimban, they do look super cool, but, I just don’t have enough knowledge to comment, hopefully someone else will chime in.

So it looks like I'm the lone Sandie in the parade.
I'll do my best to represent MEPD.

Happy New Year from the Northern Darkness Garrison to all my fellow Sandies!
Hope to meet many of you at Celebration in April!

Thanks everyone for the kind words!
I really like the cheese grater aesthetic as well. I need to find a set of them in latex.
I am debating PO, I really want to do it. But I have back problems, not sure how well I can deal with the extra weight. We shall see.

Just wanted to say hello to all my fellow Sandies. Life goal achieved of joining the 501st Legion as a Sandtrooper. I was just approved earlier this month. I am from the Northern Darkness Garrison in Indiana USA. While it is just basic approval I took screen accuracy very serious in my build. It is an AM armor and helmet. My blaster is a Hyperfirm that was delivered in August just before they went defunct. Pauldron is by Trooper1. Large Spanish pouch (not visible in pic below) from Blaster 8266. My helmet is entirely hand painted by me. Never done anything like this before, but it was a very rewarding experience. Over the last 6 months of the build I have looked at almost every build thread here on MEPD for details and guidance. I'm especially grateful to SWAT #47 (TD-84414) for inspiration. I have tried to achieve a reasonable facsimile of the Road Block Captain Version 2.

Please post pics of your first troop when you can.
Good luck and have fun!

I was wondering the same thing.

I just wanted to say this looks amazing. I’m building my first ever armor and I’m doing a Sandtrooper. Wanted to thank you for putting up this build thread. It’s been super helpful to me. I refer to it all the time.

Hi all!
I'm brand new here. I currently do Indiana Jones cosplay with a near screen accurate Raiders Indy outfit. After seeing all the fun the 501st was having at C2E2 in Chicago (that's me as Indy in the pic attached) this year I have decided I need to join up. I am learning all the details and absorbing it all in before I order any armour. I'm planning to go to the Joliet Library Star Wars Day this coming Saturday and talk to the 501st delegation there. I'm wanting to a Sandtrooper because I love ANH and love the weathered look of the armour. Also, the fact ANH and Raiders share Tunisia adds to the appeal for me. My goal is to have armour ready in time for SW Celebration in Chicago next year.
