  1. Scary as it was, I've done the first attempt on the lid, trying to stay as close as possible to the screen shots of my chosen sandy. It's almost there, but I'll tweak it a little. The dirty areas have come out much more orangey in the pics. This isn't a true representation of the colour, but you can get an idea of what I'm aiming for.

I gave the helmet a wash of tan/sand coloured acrylic then rubbed it down with some kitchen roll. This created a nice subtle uneven base. Then I added the grime with varying shades of Citadel Woodland brown to black for the general grime and real dirty areas. The back of the lid I just did randomly as there are no reference pics of this.

And here is the right bicep, weathered to match one screen as close as I could.

With the ab plate, shoulder bells and back, I'm just really making it up kind of based on some of the other armour shots, as these parts are never seen on this trooper.

  2. Begun, the weathering has...

I went a bit heavy on the right shoulder bell, but after this pic was taken, I took it back a bit onthe darkest parts and it looks a bit more subtle now.

Also, I'm now the proud and loving owner of a Doopy's DLT-19. Not for SWAT clearance mind, DB Sgt v1 only has an E-11, but if you're going sandy, you need a BFG in your life :D

  3. Does anyone have any reference pics for Docking Bay Sgt v1 (2 small Spanish pouches and the canvas MP40 shoulder pouch with the tool pack) other than these? I've got to the stage where I'm ready to start weathering, but could do with a little more reference if I'm ever going to go for SWAT.

The weathering on the shoulder pauldron in the docking bay and the last pic looks similar to the cantina sgt, and the road block captain v2 (the one with the MG15) , I wonder if it's the same one. Just noticed it's on Davin Felth too, in the "Look Sir. Droids!" scene.

Was the same armour used by another trooper in another part of the film? I know the sandies were mix and match, with various components being used by different troopers (check out Davin felth's lid on the roadblock Private). If anyone knows where I can find shots of the back of this suit, I'd sure appreciate a pointer.

  4. I made it.

I made a paper pattern using the genuine pouch as a guide. I'd already had some practice with saddle stitchingon a TK holster I made.

The leather was a bit stiff and new looking, so once it was together, I gave it a good soak, rubbed the edges with the shaft of a screwdriver to burnish them and went over the whole thing with wire wool once it was dry. Pleased with how it turned out.

  5. Had to make my canvas belt this afternoon, after discarding the leather one, but that's another job done.

So does the new stuff fit any better?

    **** yeah, it does.

Needs a bit of tweaking/internal padding to make it sit right but I'm loving my new legs. Now I can get stuck into that back pack.

  6. No worries Paul. I'm really pleased with how it's all looking.

I've tried the individual parts on and all the lengths seem spot on.

Am going to sort the poppers on the thighs to get it all attached to the rest of the suit and have a proper fitting of all the armour later today. Will try and post pics.

  7. Well, I glued them up as they were in the photo. The left thigh top I cut down but left a little extra on. Then I used an old iron on "silk" setting to gently heat the plastic and recreate the return edge to match the other side. The was a slight but of shrinkage, but nothing I won't be able to hide.

  8. It's about half an inch difference.

The trouble is, there's a return edge on this armour, unlike my FX, so just lopping off that peak won't look any good. I'm sure I can sort something though. At the end of the day, at least I can disguise whatever I do with a bit of dirt

  9. Ok, works now.

Yup, the "wasp sting" part you've already mentioned. What about the mortar tube? And isn't there another, thinner, smaller tube on the left side too?

(Ignore the bottom left pic, it's the other type of filter pack)

  10. Back in March, I got hold of a set of FX armour and a VT lid. The build went fairly well until I got to the legs (maybe you've seen my thread searching for longer leg armour, which I now have). I'm 6'2" and most of my height is in my legs.

This is how it looks at the moment - ignore the TK sniper plate, this was temporarily velcroed in place for a friend's kid's party where I lent him the armour and will be replaced with the correct TD part. I'm happy with everything but the legs - you can see the vast expanse of black at the knees. This looked 10 times worse at the back.

In the meantime, I've got hold of one of trooper1's excellent pauldron's, a small spanish pouch and have made a repro pouch to match (I'm going for docking bay sgt v2) and a bunch of backpack parts which are in progress. I'll post some pics when it's more than just a pile of random parts.

Here's my repro spanish pouch - haven't been able to find an accurate fastening stud for it yet, but will replace as soon as I can find one:

Last week I picked up my extra long TM leg armour. I've assembeled the lower leg armour and am really happy with this, just need to tidy the top and bottom edges and it's done. Here's a comparison with the standard FX armour. Shouldn't have any problems with gaps with the TM stuff:

Now, the thighs won't go together quite as well, the 2 halves are different lengths.

They're just taped together at the moment.

The right thigh (on the left in the pic) isn't such a problem as I can level it at the top and hide the difference at the bottom with the ammo pack.

The LEFT thigh though, is going to be a problem, I've got no way of hiding the difference in length - you can see the difference at the top in this pic:

Anybody got any suggestions as to how to get around this?

  11. Hi all,

Been with the 501st's UK Garrison since 2005, started as a TIE pilot, then Vader, then the nearest to a sandtrooper I could afford at the time - snowtrooper. The whole time I've been hoping to one day own a sandtrooper. With the sale of my TIE costume, project sandy is finally go!

Looking forward to the research, the build and a nice DLT-19.
