  1. Thanks Marc

Paul, I'll let you know as soon I know which Con John will be at.

Seth, thanks for the offer and sending sample, I intend to finish off my own backpack, had the parts for around 4 years now, even TE's Radio box gathering dust in the loft. So I shall need to obtain stow-n-go box, hopefully I can get one on ebay.

Be great if we can the origins of these parts as the people in the know are getting old now. I wonder if that book "Making of Star Wars" will shed any more light? Btw you guys should have fuzzy hair and good tans to be ultra accurate

  2. That's a possibility it being the original plastic colour of the products. Any one know what they were?

Still no hard concrete evidence on colour good theories, lets see if John Mollo knows what was used. He verified the grey and blue ab buttons when I saw him at a con here in the UK and also went on how they had to hand paint the helmets white every 5 minutes as it wouldn't adhere to the plastic. Next con he is at in the UK I'll ask.

  3. I've done some research into this similar to when I researched ANH TK paints a few years ago.

As we know Humbrol supplied the big studios like Elstree and Pinewood with paint, so it is highly likely that Humbrol was used by the costuming/ Art department. In the 70s Humbrol only had a range from 1-50. I purchased 3 tins of paint, which I considered to be close. After making sure I had mixed the paints properly, (stirring with cocktail stick for a few minutes to mix the oil in). I painted swatches onto a piece of plastic. ( I will post photos up later.) Now it hard to match what was used on screen but looking at numerous photos as no packs survived, I came up with the following:

I'll try and get some photos of the swatch in shadow as well, to show how the color can look a darker grey.

Be interested in what you Sandtrooper experts think?

  4. Rustoleum Country Blue or American Accents Slate Gray. Essentially both the same.

Be interested to know how this was found out.

    Cheers

    Tony

oh, sorry... I don't know the 'real' color. I posted that as easy alternatives for today's use.

No need to apollogise Mike, I was just interested hoping you had found out what was used. We have to research this properly sometime. Be great to know. Hopefully John Mollo will still remember.

  5. the correct color is the dark blue #15 and the other color is not french blue, but turquise blue, like on the set for stun helmet I used to own. Still looking for the color. for some reason I can only get the #15 here..

    hmmm.. strange..

    Matt/STE

Hey Matt long time buddy, Med blue (48.) is a Turquoise blue, so it could be that. Matt I can send you some Humbrol Mediterranean blue (48.) paint if you want?, PM your Address

blue almost looks matte.Could be Humbrol 144 intermediate blue or 96 RAF blue? The black on the vocoder looks satin, though it could have lost it's shine over the years

Paul Remember only colours from 1-to 50 were available when ANH was made. Also wear could taken the gloss off the helmet to make it look Matt.

    thank you Tony!

btw.: welcome to the dirty boys, since these are your first posts! i think i know you from the RPF, right? nice to have you here!

    Thanks, good to be here

Regarding Sandtroopers as we know they were made from HDPE which is a ***** to paint white. When chatting to John Mollo, he said the paint kept on falling off. So they were chucking white paint on with brushes to build up layers, you can see the drip marks. I forgot to ask him if it was Emulsion or gloss. Now what would be cool to know what that white paint was? A british brand like Dulux? Hmmm???

  6. and both colors were used in ANH on sandtrooper helmets?

    many thanks for your help...

The Midnight blue (15) is for the Sandtrooper, use thinners. Also I'm pretty sure Mediterranean Blue (48.) was used esp now the Stop that Ship and Move along were found.

  7. That part of the strap is actually plastic, and part of the chestplate. As far as I know, Gino armor is the only one to replicate this feature. These straps, like the stromtrooper straps, don't actually rest on your shoulders. The real straps are facric, and inside.

Above is a Gino set of armor, the chest and back do meet up as said above. I used white elastic to hold these parts under the armour.

  8. and which color is accurate for the tube stripes?

I may be able to help here, we know at least two different blues were used on the helmets, one was the dark blue Humbrol Midnight Blue (15) the other would of been Humbrol French Blue (14).
