  1. No, the back is a butt join but there is a cover strip glued on one side. The outside. This creates the illusion when they are closed that there is a cover strip over the seam.

From my research, the strips on the leg (thigh and calf) should be 3/4" wide. So if we do a butt-join on the back side, each section will only have about 3/8". Will that be enough meat(space) to put the velcro?

I am so sorry for all this questions. Just very new to this butt-join thing ;)

  2. I have the MC kit.

I did a butt-join on the front and put 2 strips - one on the inside and one on the outside - to make sure the joint is secure.

So....from my understand here, the back suppose to be an over-lap join?

Is there some pics out there where it shows that the back have strips?

  3. Hi guys,

I am putting together a TD armor right now using those "strip" version for glueing between each pieces.

So far it is easy enough for me since none of the pieces needed to be open up to put them on.

My only question is on the calf pieces. I know it need to open up at the back to put it on.

So how do you guys do it and still using the "strip"?

Any help or pics greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Az

  4. I was working on a new TD backpack yesterday in my backyard. There are a lot of Finches - Gold, Green and House all over my yard.

    So........... :0Lighten::0Lighten::0Lighten:

I have all these backpack parts and some misc parts in my garage. With the help of son, Dylan....we came up with two of these. :0bounce: :0bounce: :0bounce:

Here is the finished products. The top part is from the mushroom cap. We painted it yellow to attract more Gold Finches. The main body is extra mortar tube after I cut them to size. These are CAB (Cellulose acetate butyrate), very lightweight and durable. The bottom parts is one of those useless TupperWare Jello cups. I have a lot of those but too small to use for the TD backpack. The landing bars are just some Papermate ball point pens and the windows are sprinkler nozzles.

  5. I used to be a boy scout when i was a kid too, and the packs came in slightly different sizes and configurations. Also, what was available back in the mid 70's isnt the same as today. I know Mike Harrison did a lot of research on the packs and frames back in the day. He would find vintage ones and cut them down to size.

This is what I'm talikng about.

You have to mod the vintage BS frame to make it fit. So you just can't say.....use the BS frame.

Now we are in the same page. :D

  6. John Mollo was the costume designer on Star Wars, but he may have had a crew working with him to create the packs. He refers to "We took plastic seed boxes", plus it;s unlikely he would have built the packs alone before the shoot in Tunisia.

This is the only info I've ever found on the original creation of the packs from the Making of Star wars book.

"George announced that he was going to take some Stormtroopers on location, and he wanted them in Combat Order. I said “Oh yes George, what’s combat order for Stormtroopers?” and he said “Lots of stuff on the back”.

So I went into this Boy Scout shop in London and bought on of these metal backpack racks; then we took plastic seed boxes, stuck two of those together, and put four of those on the rack.

Then we put a plastic drainpipe on the top, with a laboratory pipe on the side and everything was sprayed black. [laughs] This was the most amazing kind of film!

George asked, “Can we get something that shows their rank?” So we took a motorcycle chest protector and put one of them on their shoulders. George said “That’s great!” We painted one orange and one black and that was it!’ Mollo concludes, happily.”

So here comes the next questions.....

Is the English Boys Scout frame is the same as the one we get here in the States?

The reason I ask is I have the Boy Scout frame and AFAIK my seed trays are scale to size. They just don't fit right. The frame is wider for the seed trays to just sit on top.

Also we all know that not everything was sprayed black and the chest protectors are not painted.

    Just curious...............

  7. vintage alum boyscout pack frames are what was used in the movie as far as i know.i will post some pics of miner here soon!

    Are you positive about that?

If so, how come the seed trays dont sit right on those frame.

I would love to see reference pictures (screen- captured) to confirm of the frame used.

    Thanks

  8. Hey bro, could you send me that info as well?

I have a bro wanting to go Sandy and the link that Scootch had up

for the seedtray has them listed as sold out.

    Thanks in advance!

  9. looks good, a little glossy but looks good. :duim:

I noticed that your very first photo of your frame, the top bar that runs across both sides is mounted backwards. This will dig in your back and will be pretty uncomfortable for long troops. Is there any way to mount it the other way? you would want that contour trust me, even with a straight bar, it was still painful for me to troop with.

    Just a suggestion bro.

    Oh man.....

Thank you for noticing that. I don't have a TD yet so I don't what it would be like trooping with a backpack.

It is not too difficult to just switch around the top bar.

Thanks again for saving my back....pack (no pun intended) ;):D

  10. And heres a picture of what I used for my sling mount. It's one of my ends from my backpack straps. I put a bolt through it with some washers, held in place with E6000.

I do have an HF T-21 too. This is the only issue I have. I don't know how to put the sling mount.

So by doing what you did.......can you hang your T-21 by the sling? Is the sling mount strong enough?

    Please let us know.
