  1. Congrats on your 10th suit of Screen Accurate Sandtrooper armor bro. We will be looking forward to the pictures of your impressive TD armor build and be inspired by it, esp those (me included) who wants to be motivated and inspired by what we will soon be seeing! :)

  2. What do you think? Constructive criticism always welcome...

My observation on your weathering is focused on the "eyes" areas of your Helmet. If the contrast is not caused by the flash of your digital camera, perhaps you can spread out the weathering underneath the eyes. Build it up in layers to simulate dirt and dust that are trapped under the "eyes".

  3. The new weathering is on the hand plate on the left and the older darker weathering is on the right. What do you think?

Looking good Rob, bringing your hand plate a step closer to the natural desert weathered look.

    Looking better bro.

The ANH troops have weathering all over them, just like you have done it.

Just beware not to make it too yellow sand

Rolf, I was also wondering about this point. Since Sandtroopers are supposedly exposed to the elements of the Tatooine desert, shouldn't elements of desert sand yellow be evident on the weathered armor?

Actually it is quite interesting to note how "clean" this Sandtrooper helmet is, almost devoid of weathering!

  4. looks pretty close....maybe if you do the heavy grey primer undercoat....apply a light coat of the blue and a "stand back misting" coat of some grey...its hard to tell from the pic though. Gotta go with what you have and its close enough that I dont think anyone would notice.

Thanks for the tips bro. I'll like to see how a "stand back misting" coat of grey will turn out to after I have done this experiment on some old newspapers. ;)

  5. Brothers (and sisters) of dirtied plastic armor, I wish to share these high resolution pictures of my weathered Sandtrooper armor that were taken during last Sunday's (October 25, 2009) charity trooping mission executed by the 501st Malaysia-Brunei Outpost B) (A thread will soon be posted up at the Tours of Duty section in this forum)

This is my 3rd round of weathering on my modified FX Armor and the 2nd round for my Mr. LAWS Stunt Helmet, modified to resemble the iconic "Stop that ship, BLAST him" Sandtrooper Officer. Like many Sandtroopers, MEPD Deployed or otherwise, before me I applied the http://www.looksirdroids.com/replica_dirty_tutorial.htm</a>'>Weathering Technique using Woodland Scenics Liquid Pigment to achieve the desired weathering effect. :) This also marked my trooping debut with the BFG of my choice the (Cushman Deluxe) DLT-19* and the first 501st Legion trooper ever to troop with this replica weapon in Malaysia. B)

(* further upgrades required such as the addition of the conical disk, metal wires to the T-tracks, more detail parts for the ammo box cover and other soft pulls associated with a Cushman DLT-19 and MG-34 as well as given my DLT-19 a proper coating of Rustoleum Primer, Gun Metal and Bakelite color for the Gun Stock)

...and here I am striking a pose as highly detailed 1:1 Scaled Sandtrooper Squad Officer Posted Image "Super Articulated Action Figure" armed with his DLT-19 (Pending Desert Backpack ;) )

    "Hunter" Pose

Face Right! (yeah I somehow pulled my Right forearm armor too up, thus exposing the leather velcro straps on my Nomex gloves  )

    Face Left!

Full Back view, yes before the eventual addition of my "Move Along" Backpack ;)

...and in marching action during the October 25 trooping. We outfit our minders with a 501st Legion logo round neck T-Shirts and the minder on the extreme left is actually a Police Reserve Force Sergeant. So its a MEPD member with a real PD Sgt, Sergeant Wong!

Also I will like to share selected pictures of my earlier Sandtrooper armor weathering efforts, and when I just trooped with a Hasbro E-11 :

  6. Due to the limited range of Rustoleum aerosol spray products and colors sold in Malaysia, the recommended colors esp. Rustoleum Satin "Lake Blue" 241252 or "Harbor Blue" 7722-830 are not sold here. :(

Instead, I have located this locally available NIPPON PAINT - PYLOX aerosol spray paint color called SEA BLUE (Code No. 308) as shown in these pictures :

I have placed this SEA BLUE next to the Bee Stinger (Faucet Cover), Lower Seed Tray (5 ribs) and CLOROX Disinfect wipes cannister that are intended to be painted blue. Colorwise, it is a shade in between Humbrol 47 Gloss Sea Blue and Humbrol 48 Mediterranean Blue. In short it is a shade of Light-Medium Blue, but does not have any Grey element in its pigment mix like Rustoleum Satin "Lake Blue" 241252, which Crashmann have shared with us.

Spray painted, it has a glossy finish where an initial layer of Primer is a MUST. The glossy sheen can be taken care of by Krylon Matt Finish and further weathered with an application of Woodland Scenics.

Will appreciate some expert opinion whether this SEA BLUE color is acceptable (or otherwise) based on the description that I've given. Thanks! :)

  7. Another viable alternative will be using Matt Varnish to give a protective spray coating over the weathering on your TD armor. I use Krylon MATTE FINISH as shown :

I'll still use hairspray to hold the Fuller's Earth application though. ;)

  8. Hey Peter....I went with PVC pipe painted black and cut to the length of 28 inches....added the top cap wich gave me the overall length of 29 inches. In the picture the pipe shows the length at about 33 inches....it was one of those things I had overlooked as I was building but has since been cut down.

Thanks Rick, and 33" is indeed long and makes the backpack imbalanced on the right side.

Yep I'll put the end caps on mine and get the overall measurement before trimming my PVC pipe.

BTW is this the Harbor Blue you've used to paint your backpack parts :

  9. The former owner did a great job making the the base gun nice and solid

by filling it with a piece of PVC surrounded by some type of plastic!

here are some pics of what I started with....

    Hey Prophet,

I have the same Cushman DLT-19 exactly like yours, except that I got Cushman to assemble it for me before he shipped it out. Looking at the pulls on my barrel I can understand your intention to convert from the existing piece with moulded on T-tracks to scratchbuilding a new barrel with real T-track pieces.

I've seen your pics and from this pic :

    Posted Image

are you in possession of 2 instead of 1 Cushmann DLT-19 barrel?

Did you cut off your Cushmann Barrel piece, or is this a separate resin casted piece?

As for mine, I will work on the Receiver where the soft pulls have obscured the details and further improved on these parts, like what is shown in your pics here :

  10. Some of the weathering detail:

Very nicely done! The darker weathering in the crevices and depression, and the contrast it creates helps to accentuate the details of your Sandtrooper armor. B)

  11. Posted Image

Here is my upgraded pack....still have to shorten side pole by about 3 inches and add stinger but its getting there.

Rick what is the exact lenght of the mortar tube you've used on your backpack? Is it a PVC Tube or an clear Alvin Ice Tube spray painted black?

I'm using a 29" Grey PVC pipe for my Mortar Tube - a good fit for the End Caps and Control Plate. :)

I might trim 1/2" to 1" off mine if things don't fit well after my dry run.
