  1. cutting the thigh is good, go for it, you'll be able to walk easier. I opted to cut a little more at the top of the thigh (about 2 inches), and a little at the bottom of the greave (about an inch). This saved me from cutting much of anything at the back of the knee.

  2. Great idea, we should definately do a detachment photo on sat. After the big picture would be great, however- last time after the picture, everyone went into the convention center, and dispersed off to whatever it was they were doing. Might it be better to try to pull this off beforehand? At C2 everyone met in one of the hotel lobbies. Maybe we could agree to all get there early for a MEPD shot? If the 501 photographer isn't available, my friend George who is going with me is a photographer, and will have his cameras along.

  3. if you sew two together it might do the trick. (the width of the belt on my 1st gen. GF armor is 4") Pretty swift though, I've never seen that one before. I had this thing that my wife had from being pregnant, it's an elastic band about the same width as the tk belt, it was for extra support during the latter part of her pregnancy. The only prob is the elastic has too much give, and sags when taxed by a blaster and all the other crap I put on my "bat-belt". My sis-in-law has a nice sewing machine & skills, I'll ask her if she'd maybe do a couple of these. -off to the fabric store! (wait, that's not exicting )

  4. I don't have any caps, but for what it's worth I think the belt was a british military belt. I've seen similar belts in military surplus catalogues, although they're usually grey or green- it might be just as easy to get a yard of canvas, and make it from scratch.

  5. I don't intend to come off over-zealous (sorry if I did). The little things like drop boxes, don't neccesarily warrent a requirement change, just recognition. With such thin numbers we don't need to exclude anyone on a technicality, huh? Maybe the small stuff could be on some sort of official/unofficial variant list?

  6. The main point of the polls is to satisfy my own curiosity about everyones opinions. Every so often someone sites a SE trooper to challenge the knee plate and ab plate requirements, then someone counters, then it is sort of left off. I just wonder what the previaling sentiment is. It's as plain as this, if it's on screen it's canon. Duh. BUT, in this situation you have a change made to a movie, and you then have a variant. What I don't think is clear to most is whether we consider the original cut trooper to be our basis, or the SE trooper, or both (or a little bit of both). Also, as a lesson to everyone, the troops in the original cut without backpacks both got shot in docking bay 94. Moral of the story: always wear your backpack. As an aside, I don't think its being nit-picky. Why is one thing a requirement (knee plate), and another thing overlooked (no drop boxes)? I don't seek to change the rules or **** anyone off, I just like discussing the details.

  7. This is an example of why I think we should vote on it as a detachment (whether to count the add-in troopers as canon sandtroopers) . The argument that it is seen on-screen is correct, however this is on the SE troopers who also have tk knees, abs, and clam-shell handbacks. So by that same logic the knee-plate and ab plate requirement would be void. If the original un-special sandtroopers are the sole point of reference, then we should stick to that for official membership in the MEPD since the idea is to be a canon detachment. If the SE trooper is acceptable as well, then we might as well trash the knee plate requirement. Does that make sense? Am I going overboard? Maybe I am being anal, I don't think anyone should be forced to part with their drop-boxes, nor do I think anyone should have to give up any part of their costume that they don't want to. I do think it should come to a vote though to gauge opinion in the group to determine democratically whether or not this should be on the list of "required" mods. Based on the outcome, our command staff could choose to add it or leave it off (or declare me insane for typing such a long-winded post). I am going to start two polls, vote on them if you like. Even if the results don't bring about any official rules, they will show current opinions on the subjects.

    Peace.

  8. I think a drop box poll would be worthwhile, but it brings up a more broad question, should we make it official one way or another that the TD's added in the special edition are not (or are) recognized by the MEPD as canon? Seeing as the SE armor used in the add-in shots is just a cleaned up ROTJ with incorrect knees and abs, I would say no, but I think we should clear this up as a detachment.

  9. Not sure if this will help, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway. My wife doesn't like star wars. (GASP!) Okay, no biggie she also is completely turned off by the whole dressing up as a stormtrooper thing (GAAASSSP!) she refers to events as "nerd gatherings" or "going dorking" (okay, that's a little funny). You get the point. Ultimately this is one interest we do not share. I try to "tone it down" around her. We have a good relationship, but we each have a couple of interests the other doesn't care for. Perhaps your wife thinks you'll be spending every night in the garage working on armor, or every weekend at events or cons. Maybe putting it into perspective would help. Most people go weeks, sometimes months at a time without trooping or working on their costumes. She might be afraid this will be an all-consuming hobby for you. Also, is it necessary for her to be into it? If you don't go nuts 24/7 about it, maybe it will seem like a small thing, no big deal. I can see you don't want to cause a rift, and that she doesn't want to stifle your perspective hobby. Definately a sticky wicket. Perhaps a round of "rock, paper, scissors" could settle things.

  10. Garrison Carida raised 415 toys on saturday to benefit our nine hospital visits scheduled for this year. It was bloody cold, but it stopped raining (after 4 days of rain) long enough for us to troop outside of a local toy store that was sponsering the drive along with the PSWCS. Two area papers stopped by and printed articles, and we posed for pictures with a lot of kids. There should be some stuff posted tomorrow on www.creaturecantina.com

  11. Over the past four years i've accumulated so much stuff due to always being on the lookout for prop parts. I think once you're in that mindset, it's hard to pass up buying/liberating/permanently borrowing things that have the right look- in fact i've got enough to probably come up with another backpack altogether. That is, if I could stop sticking more crap on the one that's already "done".

  12. most everyone builds their backpacks so that they are two hinged pieces. That way, it will hang on you naturally and pivot depending on how you bend. I have seen a few who have built frames, but the packs in anh did not appear to be on a frame. There are two popular tutorials, one at tk409 for the "two rubbermaid boxes held together by bolts" (like mine-see gallery TD6025) and another where its two battery boxes held together with a hinge. (can't remeber where this was from) both look pretty good, and either way you can assemble a nice looking pack for about $50.
