Weird! That does explain the dingy look of the material though.

I agree, the black thing looks like a thick coiled wire. Sort of like an old guitar cord, or maybe a round phone cord if they still exist. The other thing looks like a wire twisted into a loop on the end. Maybe they were preparing to dye Easter eggs.

Welcome bro!

Its painfully close, if that answers it. I am doing my best to get it going but over the past couple weeks and probably for a couple more I can't make any promises. I am trying to overcome one last fabrication issue with the arm strap and then the "dam will burst". Its not helping that I am in the process of packing and preparing for a move.

I'll be watching this for sure.

My friend Clark has an MG with a bakelite stock and its that typical bakelite brownish-black color. Some of it was solid black, but that color you are seeing is normal also. Here is a nice entry about the material http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakelite

If anyone ever IDs this part they should get a freaking medal.

Nice job man, what a difference huh? The patch would be fine, but I'd do it with velcro so you could remove it for 501st "canon" events.

Excellent work Iain!

Good work man

You are 100% bro, soon you'll grace the Deployed Gallery!

Nice chart, thanks for sharing that! I agree about the dry time. I paint over the course of a few days, just do it after work or before bed every night and that way you know for sure when it is ready for another coat.

Not to deviate too much, but its funny how for the most part the countries who "lost" WWII like Germany & Japan re-focused on arts and culture and the countries who "won" like the U.S. and Russia focused on more ways to obliterate each other.

Good work, its all over but not caked on.

You can get a reproduction semi auto version in Canada for something like $3,000 or $5,000 (can't remember). A firing antique would surely get expensive though!

Yeah I agree; a healthy dose of hairspray does help to protect the paint. Although, I primed (but not sanded) the first ones I did and it chipped just the same as the un-primed un-sanded ones did. So lesson is whether or not you prime do make a point to sand.

Using an elastomeric (like the vinyl paint) couldn't hurt. Although you might want to use the correct color, I don't think a regular spray paint will work right with the specialty vinyl paint. For the wipe bottles I've found that if you give them a thorough wet sand (600 grit is what I use) prior to paint it aids adhesion quite a bit.

Star Wars drew heavily on WW2 for visual inspiration. This only adds to the ability to relate and believe in what is happening. Lucas' use of archetypes and legends, along with stories that drew from real history are what make Star Wars what it is, and I think the real reason the second trilogy was generally weaker up until episode 3, due to the lack of clear analogies in ep1 &2.

Great trooper & awesome shots!

I've found no measurable difference in priming or not priming the Tupperware parts. Start with a light coat, then do a couple normal coats.

The USPS doesn't permit aerosol cans in its packages. To ship a spray paint you'll need to use UPS and pay the hazardous material surcharge. Also, each country has a listing of what you can and cannot send into the country via any carrier. Often it includes things that are legal to ship within the country. Check the list for AU before sending a can there, or else it might be seized.

The "D-coil" appears to come out of the back end of the barrel where it meets the top side of the front of the receiver and goes under the rear-most ridge on the top of the barrel.
The little tubes seem to come out of the middle (height-wise) of the forward ridge and reattach where the barrel diameter changes. For those I'd use a thick gauge wire. Any kind of pipe or tubing will be too large.
