Sterling Manual

just wanted to post this little thread to give you guys a short review or at least some pictures of the E-11 Blaster by Imperial Arms 3D. First of all, before I desided to go all in with a complete set of armor I just wanted to have something to put on display in my man cave. I found the online shop and ordered a finished E-11 Blaster at the begin of march this year. Shipping time was approximately 6 weeks. Within this time I decided to get a sandtrooper commission by RS. I ordered the commission without a blaster because I'd just ordered one... But everybody knows what happend this year... right, Covid 19... So they guys at imperial arms weren't able to stick to the shipping date. They are located in Florida and Covid wasn't the worse thing, they got hit by a hurricane and their shop got flodded... So it really took some time for the order to get shipped. I got the tracking number at the end of october and of course the package got stuck at the customs. But after almost 8 month I got the blaster. In the mean time I got myself a blaster by RS.

The quality of the 3d print is good. If I'd do it again I'd order the DIY version because I think that it's possible to get rid of the printing lines a little bit more by using a good filler. The stock is foldable but a little bit wonky because it's really thin. The triggerm and the spring are functional. Maybe I'll give it another round with filler in the future to make it look a little bit better. I guess it is nothing to troop with and just for displaying.

I had already developed an idea in my head how to do the rest. Most of it would be done with some other scrap parts I still had, some different diameter pvc pipes, some left-over parts of a Doopydoos E-11 kit (scope and counter) and a real sterling mag. 
So I modified the front of the buttstock to accept the pipes. It´s a very sturdy build.

after finishing some other side projects around my house it's time for another SW related project. Since you're no "real" sandtrooper if you don't have a bapty, I decided to build one. At the end of last year I earned some experience with smoothing out the printlines of 3D printed parts with liquid resin. So I want to gowith a 3D printed Bapty version made by 3d props NL. I've ordered a diy kit but due the pandemic everything took much longer. Last week was BBD and I was confused why the box so big because I expected it to be much smaller. And the reason was that it almost came completely assambled.

I disassambled the blaster today to seperate all the parts because smoothing out is much easier. The whole blaster is a mixture of 3D printed parts aligned arround an aluminum pipe and some parts which were casted in resin. I'll definately want to exchange some parts like the scope rail and the trigger guard with metal parts but first there will be a lot of filling and sanding.

There are some real good WIP in the forum and Originalprop is a good resource. I'll keep you guys updated!

Some talented guy came up with these files which show more details of this blaster:

Now I wanted one but being a sandtrooper, this regular and rather blank-looking Shoretrooper version would never suffice. 
Moreover, I wanted to completely scratchbuild this thing, no 3D-printed parts.
The only two parts which aren´t scratchuilt, are the magazine, which is a cut-down real Sterling mag, and the scope, which is a left-over Doopy-scope I still had lying around from one of my previous builds. 
So I decided to build myself a Tunisian/Bapty version of this blaster, as it is way easier to scratchbuild this. 

I am using my own other Bapty builds as reference and after making cardboard templates for everything, I started with the pipe for the outer barrel. 

So I went for Mark´s rubber bapty and ordered it unpainted as I planned to paint it myself. What I like about it: great details and very sturdy, communicating with Mark was great too, he´s a nice guy - always kept me updated about the progress and sent some pics - and he was even so kind to add some goodies, stickers, a pin and a patch, thanks for that!

What I didn´t like so much: the grip was very rough, looked as if it was ground down with a file and the mag with the wood inside didn´t look right as the mag´s walls are way too thick.

This is a variant of the E11 blasters used in Star Wars for the filming of the Tatooine scenes in the deserts of Tunisia. For this purpose, the Sterling SMG MK4 (L2A3) was modified (by Bapty &Co.) by removing parts or replacing them with dummy parts. Because this project uses common parts with a stock Sterling, I am only including parts that are unique to the Bapty blaster. The rest will be a bit of a scavenger hunt. after seeing my fellow deployment officer Thomas´new Doopy build, I was so in for an upgrade of my own modded Doopy build.

Here´s what it looked like at the beginning, it was indeed my very first E-11 build... and definitely a lot of room for improvement.

Wasn´t very happy with the paintjob on the scope so I made a new one:

But in the last weeks I completely reworked the whole blaster... wasn´t very easy to take it apart and sand it down.

made a new trigger guard and scoperail:

and added a lot of small details:

also remodelled the backpart to emulate the original cast aluminum back with those seams:

So the back was spraypainted in a silver colour while the rest of the blaster was spraypainted with a gunmetal and a light coat of chocolate brown and black. I then masked off certain areas to give it that used look with paintchips. Finally I gave it a new paintjob using the same wrinkle spray paint Thomas has already used in his build. I also added the wire wrapped in red cloth on the power cylinders.

The counter is a real vintage Hengstler but has a plastic box at the front on which I have cut out the square in the middle. The mag is real too... with real wood!

The cartridge ejection is made of metal bend and cut into shape... because only painting it silver wasn´t enough anymore.

As I really want this to be the blaster of the Move Along Captain, I have also added the little greeblie on top of the scope... although I think that there might even be two of those greeblies according to the following picture. Let me now what you think.

First up, the Tunisian "Bapty" E-11 (Sandtrooper Blaster) 

I got these wonderful cast aluminum parts from @bigwam. The grip and rear end of the blaster will be solid aluminum. Need to do some finishing work on these but I am so excited to have a Bapty made with real cast metal parts. 

To go along with it I have a real magazine. A great replica Hengstler (courtesy of Field Marshal again). A real Sterling folding stock. and a real 1942 M38 scope. 

Got a lot of mods ahead of me on this one. But I'm excited to have a fully metal Bapty build. Hard to get in the states without re assembling a cut up Sterling. 

Next up, the standard E-11

This is a blend of the rest of the Fieldmarshall parts and the Doopy kit. 

As much as I would like to, I doubt ill be able to get the bolt to fit in this thing sadly, same with the barrel, so I will probably be selling those parts off. Keep an eye out if interested. 

I am super impressed by the kit. It is super fun to put these parts together, the folding stock and grip/trigger were so much fun to build. The grip details are insane. And it came with switches and whatnot to put electronics in it. 

This second kit should pull together much faster than the Bapty. But this will probably be my new main trooping blaster. The Bapty will be on display in my Sandy shrine lol. 

I'm excited to start these builds fast so I can get to my favorite part, the weathering. 

Thanks to Fieldmarshall for such a cool kit, sorry I'm splitting it up, I know some are probably thinking I'm crazy of doing it this way, but Sandy's are my first love and I'm going to uber accurate on that blaster. 

as some of you might have already suspected, I am following in the footsteps of my friend Bigwam/Thomas and have built my own Sterling-based Bapty E-11 with the back end and grip that Thomas has casted and believe me, he and his son Martin have done such an awesome job. Those parts  just feel right !

I will not cover the building process as Thomas has already done that in his own thread... I am just going to show you the final product, here it is: 

The scope is a real vintage 1943 M38 scope, the Hengstler counter is also a real vintage counter with a genuine metal box. Those powercylinders are Fieldmarshall parts. Also: real wood in the mag.

I also added a wash with some watered down Vallejo game colour Earth to emulate some sandy dust.

However, my son and I (it's always a double project, we always build double) wanted to try it with real parts. That means - grip and rear end made of metal. Not easy,  we soon noticed. What metal to take? Pewter and Plumb? To soft.  Aluminum? High melting point. We will do it in the garden ... Our alternative: ZAMAC.  A mixture of tin, copper, aluminum and magnesium.  Melting Point: 340°C - thats OK.

Next Problem: The mold. After some research, special silicone for high temperatures. Maintains six to seven casting cycles.  Ok, so let´s go.

First, i cut the rear end of the sterling ... I took the mass from the picture, that I have increased to 1: 1.

Yes.  Those are Sterling Machine Gun parts.    I am getting a resin Blaster from RS, but my brother and I decided it would be very cool to make a blaster out of an actual Sterling.   If it works out, I'll be posting progress photos in this thread.    A friend of the family does really good mig welding, and my brother is an excellent fabricator and modeler.    Should be an interesting project!    Stay tuned!
