Airborne Trooper's Pack Build

Finally building my new pack and trying to get as accurate as I can. I have the karrimor frame. I believe it's the K2 model

Mocking up seed tray placement

There's too much gap between the top of the seed tray and the top bar. Had to drill new holes and drop the bar down lower.

Looks much better!

And away we go!

Here's how much I ended up cutting off the top of my Karrimor pack, close to 9":

My T76 mortar tube caps were way too big and I really didn't feel like spending a day finding a 76-78mm pipe and settled with the 2" charlotte pipe many of us use. Had to have crashmann rush me these and like always, great customer service!

I used these screws to assemble my pack. They work very well

My T76 fuses or whatever they are called

I forgot to take photos of the battleship grey tray assembly. If someone needs photos of the inside, I will cut the zip ties and take some. Here's how I did the black trays:

Utilize screws that are securing items to the trays already. In my case, I had to use E6000 to glue in the L bracket for the one on the top left in the photo

Match your drill holes to where the brackets are on the lid. Try to get it as close to the aluminum bracket as possible. If you can find some skinny zip ties that are long use those. I could only find large ones so I doubled up. It makes it much easier to get all 4 zip ties through:

I had the great Quartermaster build my exhaust. John does some fantastic work and I'm glad he was able to hook me up.

For the wire that wraps around the radio, I took some 22g kanthal wire. I have been vaping for about 4 years now so I already had it around.  Cut a long piece of wire and fold it in half. Put the loop end in the chuck of your drill bit and hold onto the end with a pair of pliers. Slowly start the drill until you get the wire twisted to your liking.

Need to find the best way to tuck the excess wire without it being difficult to remove so I can open up the radio

I used these roller latches from Home Depot to secure the radio faceplate. I glued them a little below the edge and once they were dry, I put in the latch and put glue on top of it. Place the lid on and leave it alone until it dries and it'll have the right placement.

If anyone needs measurements or questions just ask.

The hole in the mortar tube allows a screw driver access to the screw on the frame:

All that's left is to paint over some of the rivets/screws and roll it around in the dirty and sand. I did one dye session for the straps that came with the frame but will need to do at least 2 more passes for it to get all the way from grey to black.

If you go back a few years you'll find a ton of argument about if Davin Felth  "Look sir, droids" even had a lab pipe to begin with. It was decided since there's no clear picture of the left side, those emulating him will need to have it. Seems that those who have received SWAT status for this particular trooper all mounted it on the tray and not along the frame as the Captain does. The best reference for Davin Felth's pack build is this:

I still need to add the D ring and antenna to my radio. I couldn't tell if there is stitching on the leather wrap around the radio so I left that off for now.

  • 1 month later...

Thanks for the kind words. I did a touch of silver dry brushing on the radio and sandwich box, a little dirt weathering, and painted some screws black. I forgot to take a picture so will update tonight. Now that I know what the real radio looks like, I need to acquire an antenna that at least looks  similar. I will need to redo the leather wrap so it's a bit thinner as I used cardboard as the template. From all the photos of Davin's pack, seems like it doesn't have the 6 pin DIN so I'll find a small D ring from the hardware store.  I took a few photos for my 501st profile and noticed right away that I will need to add a sternum strap as well for comfort. I typically do 3 hour plus long troops.

Jason,

Below are some pictures of a Cistern I got from the UK.  Would this work on a pack?  I am currently building a pack.

Would I need to change anything on it?  I am thinking that I would have to change a lot of stuff.

Thanks.  This is my first Sandtrooper pack build.

It looks sorta similar to the one Gordon offers. Unfortunately, it's far from the British made one used in the movie. Those are pretty rare to get unfortunately so that's why many of us have gotten the next best thing from Gordon. Take a look at Panda's siphon build here in the Field Backpack section.
