LoveMonkey
Well, with less than a week to go for my Salt Lake Comic Con deadline, it's time for the finishing touches, aka weathering. Not all of it is done, but I was able to knock out the forearms, biceps, shoulder bells, and shins in about 3 hours, maybe 4. I used pandatrooper’s method, but instead of the two layers, I did just the burnt umber dirt layer. I really like how it turned out and this is some of the most fun I’ve had with this build. Maybe it’s because the end is in sight, but I just love the way it looks. Some of my garrison members have commented that it looks a bit dark and a lot dirtier than what is seen on screen. Which I agree. However, I'm not aiming for SWAT status (P.O. at best). I really like how it turned out and it just looks like I got really dirty looking for those droids. Anyways, comments and suggestions are welcome. And if I do need to lighten it up, now that the acrylic paint has dried, what suggestions do you guys have to make it not so dark? To be continued... Baron
While I would say the weathering does look pretty good, I have to agree with your garrison mates, it is a bit dark and heavy. I would tone it down and add 1-3 lighter colors to it also to give it more of a dirty "sandy" and dusty feel to it. This would also round out the randomness of the weathering and not quite so one-dimensional. That would match the on screen a little, but for P.O. that does not matter too much. With that being said, weathering is very subjective to the one who is doing it and there is no real right or wrong way, whatever looks good to YOU. But it would look better with a few lighter shades thrown in. Great job so far dude!!!!! Baron
LoveMonkey
Thanks for the advice. I'll be tackling it again in just a little bit.
LoveMonkey
I worked some more on the weathering. I used mineral spirits to strip some of the burnt umber away and then added some lighter brown, yellow, tan, and gray. I know that you can still see some of the brush strokes in these pictures. I did not have as much time as I wanted to work on weathering today after trying the fix the bucket but I wanted to play around with the new colors I had purchased and see what effect I could get. This is the result. I mostly wanted to get some of the colors right.

LoveMonkey
So while at Comic Con I worked with fellow garrison members on my internal strapping system and weathering. Neither is completely done but progress was made. After Comic Con, I went back with a damp rag and worked off a lot of the paint we put on, attempting to recreate that classic Sandtrooper look. I think it looks great. My GML is going to have me work with another member to get the final touches done. Here’s to being done in the next few weeks for Halloween! Does anyone have any suggestions to keep the paint from rubbing off? I noticed that there were streaks in the paint where the armor rubbed against each other while being transported in my bin and I don't want it to come off after a few months after all of this hard work. Jancelot
Looking really nice, now! Big respect for your continued modifications and work. Although they never really end. No tips here as I'm still finishing mine up. How long was it from the painting to the transport in your bin? I've had mine in and out of my bin several times and haven't had any noticeable wear. Perhaps the paint needed longer to dry? I usually let my parts sit out for a few days.
DirtyBoy
You could use a clear coat if worried about it.

After talking with fellow Garrison members in going to clear coat it after approval. Will at least help keep the weathering on longer in between touch ups. LoveMonkey
Here is the updated weathering pictures. They will be touched up right before my submission pictures are taken in case any of the paint gets rubbed off. Once approved it will be clear coated. I think it looks pretty good. Baron
Dude, that looks a lot better and much more natural. the different shades really round out that you have been out in the desert or sand looking for droids!!! I would advise against any clear coat. Most clear coats will either add a shine to it, or make it look dull. Neither of which you want. I weathered mine over a year ago, still looks great and does have rub spots where it has kinda come off, but that is normal "wear and tear" and also looks more natural in my opinion. I can also pull those parts out and re-weather a little if I wanted. I am not a fan of making things that I cannot relatively easily change later without a lot of extra work or repair afterwards. That is one reason I would never clear coat my armor. I rarely use rivets when I can use nut and bolts. My helmet is not riveted, I can easily take it all apart. My pack is all nuts and bolts and I can take it all apart easy also without drilling anything. I prefer to keep my options open With all that being said, excellent work dude! Whi8le you are obviously free to use whatever color or method to achieve the results YOU want, here are the 4 colors I used. I think your helmet could use some light touches of a lighter shade. Again, excellent work bro! Looking forward to seeing the full kit Baron
